Chapter 10 - The Fall Story

Travis’s defense clung to one phrase:
“She fell.”
They acknowledged arguments.
Rope? They claimed “support belt” used during chores.
Ridiculous but defense must explain.
Audio:
Tie her tighter.
Maybe they said safety.
The medical evidence mattered.
Dr. Pierce testified in grand jury:
Bruising patterns at different stages.
Marks consistent with external restraint around waist.
Facial injury.
Rib injury.
Placental abruption.
Could a fall cause abruption?
Yes.
Could repeated blunt trauma contribute?
Yes.
Can medicine identify exact strike?
No.
The prosecution did not need fantasy certainty.
Then neighbor Judith Lane.
She had seen rope around my waist twice from her kitchen.
She thought Travis was helping me exercise? She admitted.
On final morning she heard:
“You useless trash!”
Then saw me on ground.
She called her husband.
They discussed calling police.
Before they did, Travis's truck left for hospital.
They waited.
Cowardice, confusion.
She cried on stand later.
No need vilify.
Then cracked phone audio.
Dates confirmed by device metadata, background television, weather, work schedule.
Defense argued recordings edited.
Forensic examiner found no evidence of splicing in key files.
Not “impossible to alter.”
Just consistent continuous files.
Then my phone had gaps.
Months without.
No issue.
Abuse doesn't need recording every day.
Then one clip:
Travis:
All you make is worthless daughters.
Emma:
Sex comes from sperm too.
Travis:
Don't talk biology to me.
Marlene:
In this family, women make excuses.
Irony.
Then another:
Emma:
Why did Riverbend say your count low if report says zero?
Silence.
Travis:
Where did you see that?
This was weeks before final morning.
Marlene:
You went through private papers?
Emma:
They involve me too.
Travis:
Not anymore.
Then a crash.
No clear assault audio? My breathing.
Enough context.
Then prosecutor Rachel Dunn told me:
“This recording establishes he knew you had discovered infertility record.”
Motive for escalation.
Then defense offered alternative:
Emma confronted Travis about paternity, he believed she cheated, marital violence followed.
But donor emails show he knew.
That would be devastating cross.
Then one jail call:
Friend:
So you thought she was cheating?
Travis:
No, I knew donor.
Friend:
Then why tell cops?
Travis:
Because what else was I supposed to say?
There.
Recorded call.
His own words.
Then Marlene released on bond and gave interview? Her lawyer wisely forbade. She still talked to church friends, some subpoenaed.
One friend, Susan Bell, recalled Marlene saying months before:
“If Emma ever finds out Travis can't father kids, she'll take everything.”
Everything meant?
Children.
Marriage.
Reputation.
No financial estate.
Then marital finances.
Our rental.
No house.
Travis's income $58k from oilfield equipment maintenance.
I had worked as accounts payable clerk until pregnancy complications, $42k.
Marlene had about $600k retirement/savings and rental property after Walter death.
She supported Travis sometimes.
No millionaire empire.
This kept story grounded.
Then why stay with Travis? Early marriage had been normal-ish.
Control increased after June.
Marlene moved nearby.
Travis lost promotion.
Drinking more.
But physical abuse began current pregnancy when I started questioning Riverbend.
That link mattered.
Before, emotional cruelty.
After, violence.
Then Samuel’s memorial.
I obtained death certificate? For stillbirth, fetal death certificate, not birth. Name can be recorded. I listed Samuel Bennett Hayes? Hmm. I wanted my maiden? We haven't set maiden. Let's define Emma's maiden surname Reed? Caroline Reed is married maybe maiden different. Could be Emma Collins. But not previously. We can call Samuel Hayes legally? Despite paternity. I chose “Samuel Carter Hayes”? The prompt uses Emma Hayes and title. Better no surname in memorial.
I did not want DNA fight on his name.
Samuel.
Enough.
Then I returned to Caroline’s home after hospital.
First night I woke at dawn expecting rope.
No one.
I went porch.
Cold boards.
Caroline found.
“Come inside.”
“No.”
I stood until sunrise.
Then walked inside because I chose.
That became small reclaim.
Then mail arrived from Travis’s lawyer.
Request:
Emma preserve all evidence and refrain from destroying donor-related documents.
Reasonable.
My lawyer complied.
Then an attached statement from Travis:
I never intended harm to the baby. I loved my son.
My son.
I shook.
Maybe he did want Samuel.
Maybe that coexisted with abuse.
I had to learn truth did not require reducing him to one motive.
May you like
He could want a boy and still endanger him.
Love without safety is not enough.
