Chapter 3 - The Sister in Law Who Knew

Two police officers entered the kitchen while paramedics waited outside.

Victor immediately changed his tone.

His shoulders relaxed.

His voice softened.

He explained that Olivia was pregnant, emotional, and confused about ordinary financial documents.

Helena supported him.

Raúl claimed Alex had created the confrontation.

The officers listened without reacting.

Then they asked Olivia to speak privately.

Alex remained nearby but allowed her to answer for herself.

Officer Rebecca Hayes guided Olivia into the living room.

“What happened this morning?”

Olivia looked toward the kitchen doorway.

Victor was watching.

The officer closed the door.

“You are safe in this room.”

Olivia touched the mark on her arm.

“He wanted me to sign over an apartment.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“He said I could not leave until I signed.”

“Did he physically stop you?”

“Yes.”

“Has this happened before?”

Olivia hesitated.

The answer was larger than one morning.

Victor had punched walls.

Taken her bank card.

Monitored her calls.

Hidden her car keys.

He had never struck her.

That fact had allowed Olivia to tell herself it was not abuse.

“He controls things,” she whispered.

“What things?”

“My money. My phone. Who I see.”

The officer nodded.

“Did you feel free to say no?”

Olivia thought about the kitchen.

“No.”

Paramedics checked her blood pressure and listened to the baby’s heartbeat.

The rhythm was steady, but Olivia’s blood pressure was high.

They recommended hospital evaluation.

Victor tried to follow.

Olivia said no.

The officers prevented him from approaching.

Alex rode with her.

At the hospital, doctors monitored the baby and confirmed there was no immediate danger.

Stress had likely caused the pain.

Olivia lay beneath a warm blanket, staring at the ceiling.

Alex sat beside her.

“I should have listened to you,” she said.

“This is not your fault.”

“You warned me.”

“Warning someone does not make me responsible for another man’s choices.”

Olivia began crying.

“I kept thinking it would get better.”

Alex took her hand.

“You do not have to decide your whole future tonight.”

“I already know I cannot go back.”

The words frightened her.

They also felt true.

Officer Hayes arrived carrying printed transcripts from the kitchen recordings.

The home security company had preserved files automatically whenever loud noise triggered the system.

Nora had access through the family account.

The recordings included months of conversations.

Victor demanding passwords.

Helena discussing how to transfer Olivia’s apartment.

Raúl suggesting they wait until after the baby was born because Olivia would be easier to pressure when exhausted.

Olivia covered her mouth.

They had planned it.

Her pregnancy was not something they protected.

It was something they intended to use.

Officer Hayes turned another page.

“There is also a recording from Nora’s bedroom.”

“Nora?”

“She activated the system manually.”

The audio began with Nora crying.

Then her voice spoke into the phone.

“Olivia, if you ever hear this, do not sign anything.”

Olivia stared at the speaker.

Nora continued.

“They keep talking about your apartment. Mom says Victor needs it to secure a business loan. Dad says you will give in once the baby comes.”

A door opened in the recording.

Nora stopped speaking.

Helena’s voice asked who she was talking to.

Nora lied and said nobody.

The file ended.

Olivia looked at Officer Hayes.

“She tried to warn me.”

“Yes.”

“Why did she act like she was enjoying everything this morning?”

“Fear can look strange from the outside.”

Alex remained quiet.

Olivia remembered Nora’s smug smile.

Now she saw the tension behind it.

A young woman trapped in the same family system, surviving by pretending to agree.

Later that evening, Nora arrived at the hospital with a police escort.

She stood near the doorway.

Her ponytail had come loose.

Without Helena beside her, she looked much younger.

“I am sorry,” she said.

Olivia studied her.

“Why did you not tell me directly?”

“I tried twice.”

“When?”

“I left a note in your purse. Victor found it.”

Olivia remembered Victor accusing her of hiding receipts and emptying the bag onto the bedroom floor.

Nora continued.

“I sent an email, but Mom controls the family internet account.”

“You laughed when he broke my phone.”

Tears filled Nora’s eyes.

“I thought if they believed I was on their side, I could keep access to the recordings.”

Olivia did not know whether to trust her.

Not yet.

But the fear in Nora’s face felt real.

“What is Victor trying to use the apartment for?”

Nora looked toward the officer.

“A loan.”

“For what business?”

“An investment company Dad created.”

Raúl had lost nearly two million dollars in a failed development.

Victor promised to save the family by using Olivia’s apartment as collateral.

Helena believed the property was owed to them because Victor married her.

Nora had discovered the losses accidentally.

“The house may be taken,” Nora whispered.

Olivia understood the desperation around the breakfast table.

They were not only greedy.

They were collapsing financially.

That did not excuse anything.

It explained why panic appeared the moment Alex arrived.

Victor needed Olivia’s signature immediately because the lender’s deadline was that morning.

The property transfer folder had been prepared using false estimates and incomplete disclosures.

Olivia would have risked losing her entire apartment.

Officer Hayes explained that the documents could support charges involving coercion and attempted fraud.

Then her phone rang.

She listened briefly.

Victor had been arrested.

Not for the argument alone.

Police found a wooden stick beside the kitchen doorway with a damaged handle and traces of fabric matching Olivia’s sweater.

Olivia stared.

“He never used it.”

Nora lowered her eyes.

“Not on you.”

The room became silent.

“Who did he use it on?” Alex asked.

Nora’s voice trembled.

May you like

“Me.”

Continue to the next part: Nora will reveal years of hidden intimidation inside the Hayes home, forcing Olivia to decide whether she can trust the woman who once appeared to stand beside her abusers.
