Chapter 2 - The Recording Nobody Expected

The front door opened before Victor reached it.
Alex Carter stepped into the hallway wearing a dark jacket, jeans, and the controlled expression Olivia remembered from childhood.
He did not shout again.
That frightened Victor more.
Alex looked past him toward the kitchen.
His eyes found Olivia immediately.
She stood beside the counter, pale and exhausted, one arm wrapped around her stomach.
Broken pieces of her phone covered the floor.
The documents remained open beside Victor’s coffee.
Alex entered the kitchen.
“What happened?”
Victor forced a laugh.
“Family disagreement.”
Alex looked at Olivia.
“Did he hurt you?”
Victor answered before she could.
“No.”
Alex did not even turn toward him.
“Olivia?”
She opened her mouth.
Years of fear pressed against her throat.
Helena rose from the table.
“Your sister is emotional because of the pregnancy.”
Alex looked at her.
“I did not ask you.”
The room fell silent.
Olivia stared at her brother.
He had always been direct.
As children, Alex defended her when older students mocked her.
After their father died, he helped her organize the estate.
When she married Victor, Alex warned her not to give up financial independence.
Olivia accused him of judging her husband.
Now shame made her eyes burn.
“He wanted me to sign over Dad’s apartment,” she said.
Alex looked at the papers.
“Did you agree?”
“No.”
Victor stepped closer.
“It is marital planning.”
“You surrounded her in a kitchen before sunrise.”
“She was refusing to listen.”
Alex’s jaw tightened.
“That is not an explanation.”
Raúl stood.
“You entered our home without permission.”
Alex glanced toward the open front door.
“Olivia asked for help.”
“She sent one dramatic word,” Helena said.
Alex looked at the broken phone.
“And Victor destroyed the device immediately after.”
Victor lifted both hands.
“It slipped.”
Nora stared down at her own phone.
Her face had become increasingly pale.
Olivia noticed.
“Nora?”
Everyone turned.
Nora locked the screen.
“Nothing.”
Alex moved toward his sister.
“Are you in pain?”
“My back hurts.”
“Did anyone touch you?”
Olivia hesitated.
Victor’s eyes remained fixed on her.
Alex stepped between them.
“You do not have to look at him.”
She lowered her voice.
“He grabbed my arm earlier.”
Victor shook his head.
“I stopped her from leaving while she was upset.”
Alex took a slow breath.
“Move away from her.”
“This is my wife.”
“She is not your property.”
Victor’s expression darkened.
For one second, Olivia feared he would attack Alex.
Then a sound came from Nora’s phone.
A recorded voice.
Helena’s voice.
“She needs to learn her place.”
Nora stared at the screen in horror.
The phone had automatically opened an audio file from a family monitoring application.
Alex looked toward her.
“What is that?”
Nora tried to close it.
Another voice played.
Victor.
“Sign the papers.”
Then Olivia’s refusal.
The entire kitchen had been recorded.
Helena moved quickly.
“Delete it.”
Nora stepped back.
“I did not record anything.”
Alex held out one hand.
“Give me the phone.”
Victor moved between them.
“No.”
Alex looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because it is private family business.”
“If the recording proves nothing happened, you should want us to hear it.”
Nobody answered.
Olivia understood before anyone explained.
Months earlier, Raúl had installed smart security devices throughout the house after a burglary in the neighborhood.
He claimed the system recorded only entrances.
Apparently, one microphone remained active in the kitchen.
Nora looked toward the small black device above the pantry.
“The home app sent me an alert because the sound level was high.”
Alex took out his own phone.
“I am calling the police.”
Helena’s composure cracked.
“That is unnecessary.”
“Then tell Victor to move away from Olivia.”
Victor remained still.
Alex dialed.
Olivia felt the baby move again.
A stronger movement.
She pressed one hand against the counter.
Alex noticed immediately.
“Are you having pain?”
“A little.”
“How long?”
“Since last night.”
His concern became urgent.
“We are going to the hospital.”
Victor blocked the kitchen exit.
“She does not need a hospital.”
Alex’s voice became colder.
“You are going to move.”
“My wife stays here.”
Olivia looked at Victor.
The man she married no longer looked powerful.
He looked frightened of losing control.
“I am leaving,” she said.
Victor stared at her.
“You walk out with him and do not come back.”
The threat entered the room like a final lock clicking shut.
Olivia looked around the kitchen.
Helena’s contempt.
Raúl’s silence.
Nora’s panic.
The broken phone.
The papers demanding her home.
Then she looked at Alex.
He did not tell her what to do.
He simply waited.
Olivia stepped toward him.
“Take me to the hospital.”
Victor’s face collapsed.
Police sirens sounded outside before he could respond.
Nora suddenly began crying.
“I am sorry.”
Olivia stopped.
“For what?”
Nora held up the phone.
The audio file was not the only notification.
A message had appeared from an unknown cloud account.
Kitchen recording uploaded successfully.
There were older files too.
Dozens of them.

Someone had been saving conversations inside the Hayes home for months.
Continue to the next part: Police will uncover repeated recordings of the Hayes family threatening Olivia, but one file will reveal that Nora secretly tried to warn her long before Alex arrived.
