Chapter 23 - Celeste’s Name Disappears

Celeste moved to Portugal for legitimate hospitality procurement work.
No contact.
No new charges.
No secret comeback.
Her name slowly disappeared from search results as newer stories replaced old ones.
Ivy asked once:
“Do you know where she is?”
“Generally.”
“Do you care?”
“No.”
Truth.
Then Grant said during a family graduation dinner:
“I heard Celeste is doing well.”
Silence.
Elise looked at him.
Ivy looked at me.
I shrugged.
“Good.”
That ended it.
No jealousy.
No curse.
Then years later Celeste died? No, unnecessary. Let her live.
Closure does not require death.
Then an old reporter requested interview for a podcast:
THE $5 MILLION MISTRESS FRAUD.
I declined.
The title was wrong.
Celeste was not the center.
Grant was not helpless.
I was not the avenging heiress.
The company was not stolen in one cinematic wire.
Reality was less catchy.
Then Ivy asked:
“Why not tell your version?”
“Because I already told it where it mattered.”
Court.
Board.
Family.
Enough.
Then she said:
“People still think your watch froze every account.”
I laughed.
“Let them be wrong.”
“Doesn’t that annoy you?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“I don’t owe strangers corrections forever.”
Good.
Then Grant's old house.
The marital house he kept after divorce.
He sold at fifty eight.
Before listing, he found a box of our wedding photographs.
Asked if I wanted.
I took three.
One with Anna.
One with my late parents.
One with Grant and me laughing before everything became complicated.
I kept that one.
Ivy asked:
“Why?”
“Because I was happy that day.”
“Doesn’t it hurt?”
“Not anymore.”
Then Grant kept none? He probably kept some. No need.
History can contain real joy before betrayal.
We do not need to rewrite early years as fake.
Then a stranger at charity event said:
“You must regret marrying him.”
I answered:
“No.”
They looked shocked.
“Why?”
“Because regret is not same as wanting a different present.”
Ivy existed.
My career changed.
I learned.
Grant changed.
No endorsement of harm.
No fantasy erasure.

Then Mara and Aaron travel. Fine.
The past became a chapter, not a room.
