Chapter 22 - Mara Steps Away

I was fifty five when I sold part of my Ellison Meridian shares.

Not all.

I reduced from sixty four percent to thirty eight over several years through employee ownership, institutional investors, and planned liquidity.

Why?

Diversification.

Retirement.

Estate planning.

No dynasty.

Ivy did not inherit an executive obligation.

Then people asked:

“Does Grant get anything?”

No.

We had been divorced for decades.

His former six percent long repurchased.

His legitimate proceeds were his.

Mine were mine.

Then I established an independent trust for Ivy.

Not control from grave.

Structure.

She could access in stages.

Professional trustee.

Clear provisions.

Aaron’s assets separate.

Prenup respected.

Then I left Ellison Meridian board completely.

The company continued.

New CEO.

New chair.

My name remained on building.

I considered removing.

Employees voted to keep.

Fine.

Then River North sold fully to pension fund.

Normal transaction.

No drama.

The final wire closed after standard approvals.

I got a notification.

Did not check immediately.

That was progress.

Then I found the smartwatch.

Old.

Dead battery.

In a drawer.

The one from garage.

I held it.

For years people told story as:

She pressed one button and froze everything.

Not true.

The button worked because months of investigation happened first.

Lawyers.

Board.

Court order.

Banks.

Forensic accountants.

Jonah.

Procedure.

Without that, it was just a watch.

Ivy walked in.

“What’s that?”

“You know.”

She laughed.

“The legendary button.”

“Would you like it?”

“No.”

Correct answer.

I recycled electronics through secure program after confirming no retained data needed.

No museum.

Then the hospital bag.

Grant had taken it that night.

Police returned later.

I used it for Ivy’s baby clothes for years.

Then zipper broke.

Threw away.

The nursery lamp.

Still had.

Why?

I liked it.

Not every object from a bad marriage needs destruction.

Then Aaron asked:

“What do you want retirement to look like?”

“Not boards.”

“Good.”

“Travel.”

“Good.”

“Grandchildren maybe.”

“Not our decision.”

He smiled.

Correct.

Then one thing.

I wrote a letter to younger Mara.

Not therapeutic assignment? Could be.

I never sent.

Obviously.

It said:

You do not have to know everything before you act.

Then:

You also do not have to turn suspicion into certainty just because you are afraid.

Investigate.

Ask.

Document.

Leave when facts are enough.

I kept for a year.

May you like

Then shredded.

Lessons do not need relics either.
