Chapter 21 - Owen Reads Evan’s Letter

Marissa waited until Owen was twenty-one to give original letter.
He knew summary.
Not words.
He read alone first.
Then with mother.
Evan wrote:
Owen, if you are the child we think we’re having and if you ever read this, I’m sorry I did not finish the Whitmore mess before you arrived.
Then:
Do not let anyone tell you money proves belonging.
Then:
Patrick spent too much of his life trying to get Henry to admit he mattered. Henry spent too much trying to solve that with money.
Then:
If the trust is yours, treat it like a tool. If it isn’t, build your life anyway.
Owen cried.
Then:
Your mother is better at building a life than any Whitmore I have met. Learn that from her.
Marissa had to stop reading.
Then:
Richard means well but waits too long. Adrian may not know any of this. Thomas will fight. None of them gets to decide who you are.
Accurate.
Then Owen asked:
“Dad thought I was boy?”
They had ultrasound maybe.
Yes.
Then:
“Did he know name?”
“Yes.”
Evan picked Owen.
Good.
Then last:
If I am there, ignore most of this and make me explain in person.
He wasn’t.
That hurt.
Then Owen folded letter.
No display.
Stored in fireproof box.
Not trust file.
Family.
Then he said:
“I don’t want Whitmore surname.”
No one asked.
He was Keane.
Good.
Then daughter Mae Keane? If married Sophie maybe child could Keane. Good.
Then he told Mae later:
“You’re connected to Whitmore, but you’re Keane.”
Additive.
Then Adrian:
I never tried to call him Whitmore heir.
Media did.
We corrected.
He was beneficiary of trust founded by Henry Whitmore.
Not “real heir to whole empire.”
Whitmore Infrastructure remained owned by multiple shareholders.
I never lost company to baby.
Thomas never owned it all.
Marissa never became billionaire overnight.
