Chapter 9 - The Woman in White Gloves

Whitmore Meridian’s executive system contained a legacy account under my name.

I had never activated it.

Frank created the account during his illness so I could assume control quickly after his death.

The account held my scanned signature, voice samples, security photographs, and personal information.

Lillian’s network accessed it six months earlier.

Someone had been approving venue changes and trust inquiries as Evelyn Whitmore.

The false Evelyn authorized the service elevator.

She approved the wedding coordinator.

She requested a copy of my home alarm plan.

She also sent Jackson messages advising him not to discuss the transfer with me because I was becoming emotionally uncertain.

Jackson believed the messages came from my assistant.

The sender knew how I spoke.

The language was affectionate without warmth.

Exactly how someone imitating me might sound.

Company security traced the access to an office floor closed after Frank’s death.

The room belonged to his former executive assistant, Caroline Vale.

Caroline disappeared one month before Frank died.

Public records showed she moved to Europe.

Her passport was never used.

Lillian claimed Caroline had worked secretly for Frank’s investigation.

Judith remembered her.

“She handled every private meeting.”

“Did she know about the Black Pearl archive?”

“She scheduled the intelligence firm.”

Caroline had access to Frank’s voice, my signature, Jackson’s records, and the wedding transfer discussions.

She could create false instructions under any family identity.

Police searched the closed office.

Someone had used it recently.

A white glove rested beneath the desk.

My copied pearls lay inside a drawer.

The computer had been removed.

A paper calendar remained.

The wedding date was circled.

Beside it, Caroline had written:

Evelyn speaks.

Natalie falls.

Jackson separates.

Lillian appears.

Restitution begins.

Every visible result had been predicted.

The shaved head.

My ballroom confrontation.

Natalie’s disgrace.

Jackson leaving her.

Lillian revealing she was alive.

The audit opening.

Caroline may have used each faction to trigger Frank’s plan while ensuring no one controlled the whole story.

Was she completing his wishes?

Stealing the restitution reserve?

Punishing Mercer Continuity?

The archive gave no answer.

A secure company camera captured an older woman entering the closed floor two weeks before the wedding.

White gloves.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

Her face remained turned away.

She used my badge.

The same woman appeared in hotel footage after the ballroom confrontation.

She stood among the guests filming my speech.

When I tore the transfer papers, she lowered her phone and smiled.

Natalie identified her as the person who called herself Evelyn.

Judith looked at the still image.

“That is not Caroline.”

“How do you know?”

“Caroline lost two fingers on her left hand during a childhood accident.”

The woman in white gloves had all ten.

Someone wanted us to believe Caroline survived.

The identity could be another mask.

Robert reopened Frank’s employment records.

Caroline Vale had an older sister.

Rebecca Vale.

Rebecca worked as a voice specialist and security consultant for Mercer Continuity.

She had trained executives to authorize documents remotely.

Her death certificate dated six years earlier.

Closed casket.

No independent identification.

Another woman had disappeared legally while her skills continued inside the system.

Rebecca may have created the false voices of Frank, Judith, and me.

Caroline may have helped Frank investigate her.

The sisters could have worked together.

The unknown woman could be neither.

Lillian denied knowledge of Rebecca’s survival.

Her account records showed monthly payments to Vale Identity Services until the wedding.

She called them archival fees.

Jackson confronted Natalie again.

She admitted wearing an earpiece during the attack at my house.

A woman guided her through the alarm, jewelry box, and bedroom.

Natalie heard Lillian in person.

The second voice came through the earpiece.

It instructed Natalie to leave the note in her own handwriting.

It said handwriting would make the humiliation undeniable.

“Did the voice call itself Evelyn?” I asked.

“No.”

“What did Lillian call her?”

“The Widow.”

Frank’s files contained a reference to a second widow.

Not a wife.

A woman whose husband died after a Mercer Continuity operation.

The second widow had spent years gathering recordings from inside the network.

Frank believed she could expose Lillian.

He never wrote her name.

The court audit found a hidden beneficiary in the founder restitution trust.

Primary reviewer: Evelyn Whitmore.

Secondary reviewer: The Widow.

Frank had granted an unknown woman authority over millions in victim compensation.

No one could activate final payments without identifying her.

The woman in white gloves may have engineered the wedding exposure to claim that role.

The ballroom had not only been Natalie’s downfall.

It had been an application for control.

Then the trust received a biometric verification request.

Applicant name: Evelyn Whitmore.

Location: the abandoned hotel basement.

I was standing inside Robert’s office when the request appeared.

Someone else was using my face and voice in real time.

The live camera opened.

A woman sat beneath a single light wearing my copied navy gown and silk head wrap.

She removed the wrap.

Her head was shaved.

She looked directly into the camera.

Her face resembled mine closely enough to make Jackson step backward.

Not identical.

Related.

She spoke in my voice.

“Frank left the fortune to the wrong widow.”
