Chapter 8 - The Man With My Face

The surgical room was beneath the original Hawthorne clinic.

Father claimed he did not know the building still existed.

Nobody believed him.

Mother carried the final ledger key. Tessa came because Marcus demanded it. Detective Bennett followed with a tactical team she trusted from outside the city.

Lily remained under federal protection with Sophie and Mrs. Harper.

Before I left, Lily hugged me tightly.

“Bring Mommy and Noah home.”

“I will.”

“Do not let Uncle Marcus say it was a joke.”

I promised her he never would again.

The old clinic looked abandoned from the road. Broken windows stared across overgrown fields. Inside, however, the emergency lights were active.

We followed the sound of a heart monitor to the basement.

Megan lay behind reinforced glass.

Noah was beside her, holding her hand.

Marcus stood near the second bed.

He pulled away the sheet.

The man beneath it looked like me.

Not exactly, but close enough to fool a distant camera. Dark hair. Similar height. Cosmetic bandages covered most of his face.

My wedding ring had been placed on his hand.

Marcus intended to create my death.

The police would find a burned or damaged body wearing my ring. He would claim I had abducted Megan and the children before killing them.

Mother stared at her eldest son.

“You planned to erase Daniel.”

Marcus laughed.

“You erased Father first.”

“I saved us from him.”

“You helped him disappear when the investigations began.”

Father stepped forward despite the handcuffs around his wrists.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave Daniel everything,” Marcus snapped. “The trust. The house. The public name.”

“You were never controlled enough to inherit it.”

Marcus’s face changed.

For the first time, I understood him.

He did not want the foundation merely for money.

He wanted the approval Father had denied him since childhood.

No amount of power had been enough because he still felt like a frightened boy waiting outside Richard Carter’s office.

Tessa moved toward the glass.

“Let Sophie’s cousin go.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You held Lily while I struck her.”

Tessa’s face twisted with shame.

“I tried to stop her from screaming.”

“You helped me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Lily.”

The words struck her harder than anything I could have said.

Mother held up the ledger key.

“You want this?”

Marcus raised the syringe near Noah.

“Place it in the console.”

She obeyed.

A metal cabinet opened behind him.

Inside was the final ledger and a portable drive.

Marcus released Noah and pulled him toward the cabinet.

Megan tore one wrist free from the restraint.

She grabbed the metal rail and struck Marcus across the back.

The syringe flew from his hand.

Noah ran.

I shattered the glass emergency panel with a fire extinguisher and climbed through.

Marcus drew a gun.

Tessa stepped between us.

He fired.

She fell against me.

Detective Bennett’s team entered from both corridors. Marcus seized the portable drive and escaped through a surgical door.

Father grabbed the ledger.

Mother aimed her pistol at him.

“Put it down.”

He opened the first page.

Names filled every line.

Politicians. Judges. Doctors. Wealthy couples. Foundation officers.

Then his face lost color.

“What is it?” I asked.

Father turned the book toward me.

My name appeared beside three transferred children.

I had never seen the records.

I had never signed them.

But the signature beneath each entry looked exactly like mine.

Megan stared at the page.

“This is what they showed me.”

She had believed I was part of the network because the documents carried my name.

Father began laughing.

“Marcus did not forge these.”

Mother’s hand started trembling.

“Richard, stop.”

He looked directly at me.

May you like

“Your mother did.”

Continue to the next part: Evelyn’s forged signatures reveal that Daniel’s mother may have controlled the child transfer network long before Marcus took power.
