Chapter 6 - The Son They Erased
Megan had been twelve weeks pregnant on the night of the crash.
She had planned to tell me at the mountain house.
My mother knew because Megan had asked her to prepare a surprise dinner.
Instead of helping her, Mother told Father.
The Carter family trust contained an old provision that transferred voting control of the foundation to the first male grandchild when he turned twenty one.
Father believed a grandson could be controlled.
Mother believed a grandson would eventually replace Marcus.
Marcus believed the child would destroy him.
“You built this entire nightmare around an unborn baby,” I said.
Father corrected me.
“A living baby.”
My knees weakened.
“The baby survived?”
Mother nodded.
“Megan delivered him seven months after the crash.”
“Where is he?”
“That is what Marcus has been trying to discover.”
Father struck the table with his palm.
“Evelyn moved the child without my approval.”
“Because you would have raised him like Marcus,” she replied.
Marcus’s voice came through the laptop.
“Enough.”
The video feed shifted.
Tessa and Sophie were no longer inside the glass enclosure.
Megan sat there instead.
She wore a gray hospital uniform. Her face was thin, but her eyes remained clear.
“Megan.”
She pressed both hands against the glass when she saw me on the monitor.
“Daniel, Lily saw the transfer list. That is why Marcus hurt her.”
“What transfer list?”
“The names of children moved through the foundation clinics.”
The charity had not merely stolen money.
It had created false identities.
Children born to vulnerable women were transferred through private adoption networks and hidden behind falsified medical records.
Our son was one of them.
Father spoke quietly.
“The system began as a way to protect children.”
Megan shouted through the speaker.
“You sold them to powerful families.”
Mother looked at him with horror.
“You told me they were emergency placements.”
Father did not answer.
Marcus returned to the camera.
“The boy is alive. Megan knows who has him. Give me the memory card, and I release Sophie.”
“Where is Tessa?” I demanded.
A second camera feed appeared.
Tessa was bound inside the trunk of a car.
The vehicle stood near a frozen lake.
Marcus held a remote device.
“One button opens the trunk. Another sends the car into the water.”
Mother handed me the evidence bag.
“Do not trust Richard.”
Father stepped toward her.
She raised a small pistol.
“You lost the right to command me six years ago.”
Detective Bennett looked toward the red laser points across the windows.
“We need to move before Marcus decides to kill everyone.”
I held the card toward Father.
“You want this?”
He watched it carefully.
“It contains records that could destroy hundreds of innocent families.”
“It contains proof that you stole children.”
“It contains names that must remain protected.”
I snapped the card between my fingers.
Everyone froze.
Father lunged.
I opened my hand.
The broken plastic was only an empty adapter.
The real memory card remained inside the hospital evidence envelope Detective Bennett had switched before entering the forest.
She had suspected corruption inside her department.
Marcus began shouting through the laptop.
Father struck me across the face.
The sound brought me back to childhood.
This time, I did not lower my eyes.
I hit him again and drove him into the wall.
Mother grabbed the laptop.
“Megan, where is Lily’s brother?”
Megan hesitated.
Then she whispered a name.
“Mrs. Harper.”
I stopped.
Our elderly neighbor had cared for Lily since birth. She had been keeping Lily at her house that very night.
Megan continued.
“Daniel, the boy has been living next door to you.”
I remembered Mrs. Harper’s foster grandson, Noah.
A quiet six year old boy with Megan’s brown eyes.
My phone rang.
Mrs. Harper’s number appeared.
I answered.
Marcus spoke.
“I found him.”
