Chapter 7 - The Aide

Dad’s aide was Captain Noah Pierce.

Thirty one.

Trusted.

Worked for him eighteen months.

He knew Dad planned to stop by my house after the ceremony because he arranged the driver.

Did Noah warn Linda?

Dad looked sick at the idea.

Agent Morgan pulled phone records.

One call from Noah’s government phone to Ryan two hours before Dad arrived.

Duration:

Forty one seconds.

That looked bad.

Then Noah was interviewed.

His explanation:

He called Ryan because Dad’s retirement? Not retirement. Ceremony. He wanted to confirm Ryan would attend a unit dinner next week.

Why then?

Routine.

Messages supported.

No mention Dad coming.

Then personal phone.

No Linda contact.

So how did Linda know?

Dad had called me from the car.

Ryan’s monitoring application intercepted incoming call metadata.

Dad told voicemail:

“Thought I’d surprise you. Ten minutes away.”

I never heard it.

Ryan did.

Then he told Linda.

Simple.

No traitor in Dad’s office.

That mattered.

Not every suspicious connection was conspiracy.

Then my blood results.

Hospital toxicology found a sedating medication in my system.

Not life threatening concentration.

But not prescribed.

The pill bottle Linda tried to hide contained that same medication.

Her prescription.

Dad stared.

“Why was Emily taking your pills?”

Linda’s attorney answered for her:

She wasn’t.

Linda claimed she accidentally left bottle on nightstand after taking her own dose.

Then audio.

LINDA:

She needs to sleep.

RYAN:

Doctor said no more.

The phrase “no more” mattered.

More than once.

My prenatal records showed I repeatedly complained of:

Extreme drowsiness.

Dizziness.

Memory gaps.

Ryan always said pregnancy.

Melissa Grant had ordered blood work once.

Nothing specific.

No toxicology.

Then I remembered tea.

Linda made it every evening.

I stopped drinking it two weeks ago because it tasted bitter.

My sleep improved.

Linda became angry.

She started bringing warm milk instead.

I stopped drinking that too.

Then Ryan forced pills directly?

No.

He would say:

“These are the vitamins Dr. Grant prescribed.”

I took them twice.

They made me sleep.

The actual prenatal vitamin bottle was different.

I had not noticed.

Shame burned.

Melissa said:

“People trust medication handed to them by family.”

Not my fault.

Still felt.

Then the baby.

Ultrasound.

Everything looked stable.

Slight growth concern.

More monitoring needed.

No evidence medication harmed the baby.

Relief so strong I shook.

Dad sat beside me.

“Your mother would kill me if I let anything happen to you.”

I looked at him.

“Dad.”

He stopped.

Words.

Control.

Hero language.

“Sorry.”

Then:

“I’m glad you’re both okay.”

Better.

Then Agent Morgan brought news from Linda’s phone.

She had been photographing my medical documents.

Not to help.

A folder titled:

EMILY INSTABILITY.

Screenshots of:

Missed appointments.

Dizziness.

Tearful messages.

A prescription request for nausea medication.

Bruises.

Then one note:

Need enough for temporary custody after birth.

I went cold.

“Custody?”

Ryan and Linda were not only trying to protect his promotion.

May you like

They were preparing for me to leave.

And they intended to use my pregnancy symptoms, some caused by medication they gave me, to argue I was unfit to keep my own baby.
