Chapter 10 - The Medical Record

The login belonged to Dr. Stephen Hale.

Ryan’s uncle.

Linda’s younger brother.

A family physician in Louisville.

He was not my doctor.

How did he access an Army hospital record?

He did not.

The credentials belonged to a civilian health information exchange connected to records from an urgent care clinic I visited once.

Someone used his account to upload an outside note that then appeared in shared records.

Stephen denied writing it.

His password had been shared with office manager?

Investigation.

Then device log.

Login from Linda’s home laptop.

She had Stephen’s credentials because she helped him with billing years earlier.

He never changed password.

Sloppy.

Did he know?

No evidence.

He was furious.

So Linda added a false note herself.

Why?

To support custody.

Promotion.

Discredit.

All.

Then other edits.

Patient reports history of panic attacks.

False.

Patient falls frequently.

False.

Husband supportive and concerned.

False.

The records had been creeping toward a story where I injured myself and Ryan rescued me.

Then Melissa documented a separate note:

Provider disputes outside history. Patient denies self-harm. Bruising pattern concerning for inflicted injury.

That note saved context.

Linda could not delete Army record.

She only added.

Then the pills.

Toxicology showed a sedating prescription medication consistent with Linda’s bottle.

No proof exactly how many times.

My hair sample? Could reveal longer-term exposure, but that's technical and not always. We can say lab could not reliably establish timeline beyond recent. Good.

No need overclaim.

Then Linda’s attorney argued she gave me one pill once at my request.

I denied.

Ryan said nothing.

Arthur’s audio:

LINDA:

She needs to sleep.

RYAN:

Doctor said no more.

That contradicted one time.

Then another clip:

ME:

Why am I so tired?

LINDA:

Because you’re pregnant.

ME:

I didn’t take anything.

LINDA:

Then stop acting drugged.

Cruel.

Then my missing prenatal appointments.

Ryan had canceled two.

Why?

One was the day after a bad assault.

Another after Linda gave medication.

They wanted bruises faded before doctor saw me.

Messages:

LINDA:

Cancel Thursday. Arm looks terrible.

RYAN:

Melissa will ask.

Linda:

Exactly.

There.

Then Dad did something unexpected.

He asked Agent Morgan to provide him with a written list of things he was allowed to do.

Not case decisions.

Support.

Transportation.

Childcare after birth.

Legal referrals if I asked.

No contact with witnesses unless approved.

No using rank.

No entering Ryan’s unit.

No calling command.

He followed it.

That was his growth happening in real time.

Then I asked Dad:

“Did Mom ever hide bruises?”

He looked shocked.

“No.”

“Did you ever hurt her?”

“No.”

I believed.

Then:

“Why did you teach me marriage was private?”

His face fell.

He had.

When I was engaged, he said:

“Never run to parents after every argument. Build your own marriage.”

Good advice in ordinary conflict.

Terrible inside abuse.

Ryan quoted it.

Every time I threatened to call Dad:

“Your father told you not to involve him.”

Dad whispered:

“I gave him that weapon.”

“No.”

I corrected myself.

“You gave advice. He weaponized it.”

Important distinction.

I was learning too.

Then Agent Morgan brought news.

Ryan had requested to speak.

Not with me.

With investigators.

He wanted to make a statement blaming Linda for “taking everything too far.”

May you like

His mother had protected him for thirty years.

Now he was preparing to sacrifice her.
