Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Version
Evelyn did not speak to me directly.
She spoke through her attorney.
Then through prosecutors.
Then eventually, when her own risk became clear, she started speaking a lot.
Her first position:
Richard controlled everything.
She signed caregiver plan without reading.
She did not know outside hospital records were incomplete.
She did not know my job termination.
Emails contradicted.
Her second position:
She knew Claire would not remain at house but believed Richard would arrange hotel.
The email:
Claire can make her own arrangements.
Contradicted.
Third:
She knew Maya’s prior transplant pause but believed it was “administrative.”
The outside nephrologist had personally told her:
Maya needs six months demonstrated adherence before candidacy resumes.
Contradicted.
Then money.
Did Evelyn authorize payments from my trust?
She was not trustee.
But she requested reimbursement for Maya’s medical travel through Richard’s office.
Emails:
Use Claire household account. Richard says it’s fine.
Household account was trust.
She knew?
She claimed no.
Then Whittaker Medical Ventures.
Evelyn owned 35 percent.
My trust put $1.8m into it.
The company funded boutique wellness clinics.
One of those clinics employed Dr. Wallace Benton, the concierge nephrologist who repackaged Maya’s transfer records.
There.
Not random.
Whittaker Medical Ventures had paid his clinic $310,000 over two years for executive health services.
When Maya’s transplant problem arose, Evelyn called him.
He coordinated transfer.
He instructed Patricia Sloan which records to upload.
Why?
He later testified he believed prior nonadherence notes were “biased” and wanted new center to evaluate fresh.
That is not his decision.
Then did Richard bribe Patricia?
Investigators found no personal payment.
Patricia had received no money.
Her motive was career and deference.
Whittaker Foundation had pledged $100k to hospital.
She knew Richard was major donor.
She wanted evaluation smooth.
She omitted records after Dr. Benton said irrelevant.
Hospital fired her for policy violations.
Regulators investigated licensure.
No criminal charge initially because intent to defraud uncertain.
Later she accepted professional discipline.
That was more realistic.
Richard did not have a paid hospital mole.
He had status.
Sometimes status is enough to make people ignore rules.
Then Dr. Benton.
He had sent misleading summary:
Patient has demonstrated excellent adherence since transition.
False based logs.
He altered wording from prior center.
He faced licensing board and possible healthcare fraud if claims.
He eventually pled to falsifying medical documentation? Could be state felony false medical records. We'll get later.
Then Evelyn's role in my termination.
Email from her:
Make sure Claire’s office access shuts off before she comes home. I do not want her wandering through company angry.
Richard:
She won’t come home.
Evelyn:
Even better.
No compassion.
Then why such hatred?
Naomi asked me.
I did not know.
Evelyn had never liked me.
But this went beyond.
Trust audit gave clue.
If I took control of my mother’s shares at thirty, Richard’s voting control in Whittaker Development dropped from 58 percent to 41 percent unless I voted with him.
Evelyn and Richard together owned personal shares around 27; other family investors balance.
At present, Richard voted my trust shares as trustee.
He effectively controlled company.
At thirty, he would not.
Unless he bought my stake cheap.
Evelyn’s lifestyle depended on company.
Maya’s too.
I was not just emotional nuisance.
I was future shareholder capable of ending Richard’s absolute control.
Then my father’s words changed again.
“You were kept around.”
Not only kidney.
Control.
If I remained dependent, he could expect my vote.
If he discarded me after extracting kidney but before trust transfer, perhaps he believed emotional shock would make me accept buyout.
Naomi said:
“Do not assume he planned one grand scheme. People often exploit opportunities as they arise.”
That was important.
Maybe Richard did not spend eight years raising me for kidney.
He favored Maya.
Controlled trust.
Then Maya got sick.
He pressured.
Then saw donor surgery as moment to force final financial separation.
Layered selfishness, not mastermind from childhood.
More believable.
Then Evelyn requested plea negotiations in criminal case that had not yet been charged? Investigations from hospital, trust, medical records could become state/federal. She wanted cooperation agreement before indictment.
Her attorney approached prosecutors.
She would provide:
Richard’s emails.
Company records.
Information on trust transactions.
Dr. Benton communications.
In exchange she wanted no incarceration.
Prosecutors said too early.
Then Evelyn did something I did not expect.
She filed for divorce from Richard.
My first thought:
Coward.
Then I corrected.
People can leave late.
She moved into condo.
Richard called her traitor.
The pattern widened.
He had controlled her too, perhaps differently.
Did that excuse?
No.
She had signed.
Lied.
Mocked me.
Cleared room.
But nobody is one role.
Then Maya moved with Evelyn after hospital.
I wondered why.
Because Richard shouted at her after she spoke to investigators:
“You owe me silence after everything I did to get you that kidney.”
Maya heard exactly what I had.
You owe me.
