Chapter 18 - Maya Learns To Keep It

Maya’s transplant anniversary became complicated.

At one year, she sent me:

Kidney still here.

I replied:

Good.

That was all.

At two years:

Creatinine 1.0. Dr Evans says excellent.

I sent thumbs up.

At three:

Can we have coffee?

I asked therapist.

Not because permission.

Because I wanted check motive.

I said yes.

Public café.

She was twenty two.

No wheelchair.

No diamond bracelet.

She had a job at nonprofit arts center.

Part time while taking classes.

“You look good,” I said.

“So do you.”

Scar?

She did not ask.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Again.

“I know.”

“I keep thinking about what I said in hospital.”

“At least somebody mattered.”

She winced.

“Yes.”

“You chose it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted you to hurt.”

“Why?”

“Because Dad had spent years telling me you thought you were better.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know now.”

Then:

“And because I was scared kidney might fail and you looked like hero.”

Interesting.

“So I made you villain.”

“Yes.”

She stirred coffee.

“I used to think Dad loved me more because I deserved more.”

I said nothing.

“Then after he was arrested, he told me I owed him silence because he saved me.”

She looked.

“That’s when I realized his love always had invoice.”

Exactly.

Then she said:

“I need to ask something.”

“No money.”

She laughed.

“Not money.”

“Good.”

“Do you want me to stop calling it my kidney?”

My eyes widened.

“What?”

“I sometimes say your kidney.”

I shook head.

“It’s yours.”

She cried.

“You sure?”

“I donated. You received. It’s medically yours.”

“But I got it wrong.”

“You got it through a process corrupted by lies. That matters legally. It doesn't mean your body is on lease.”

She covered face.

Then:

“I think I needed you to hate me.”

“Why?”

“If you hated me, I could keep hating myself instead of changing.”

Therapy.

Good therapy.

Then her medical adherence.

Perfect?

No.

She missed a dose once every rare year.

She used app.

Called.

No hiding.

At five years, slight rejection episode from viral infection, treated.

At ten, graft function still good but gradually declining? Living donor kidneys can last many years. Let it remain stable 15+.

No miracle permanent.

Dr Evans told:

“Transplants are treatment, not cure.”

She listened.

Then her relationship with Evelyn.

Complicated.

Evelyn released after serving around twenty months with credits.

Maya met.

Evelyn wanted immediate reunion.

Maya said no.

Interesting role reversal.

Eventually limited.

Then me and Evelyn?

She wrote apology after release.

I accepted letter.

No meeting for years.

At forty, maybe later.

Then Maya asked to speak at transplant ethics panel? That could be public. She initially wanted.

I said:

“Your story. But don’t use mine without consent.”

She nodded.

She eventually participated anonymously with hospital education, discussing recipient nonadherence and family pressure.

No martyr.

She admitted.

Then Dylan? none.

Maya dating.

I did not need.

Then one day she said:

“I’m thinking nursing.”

I nearly laughed.

“Why?”

“Too cliché?”

“Yes.”

She chose occupational therapy instead? Still medical. Maybe she studied accounting. Let's not make trauma career. She majored graphic design.

Fine.

She became packaging designer.

Ordinary.

Then at age twenty six, she got married to Evan Cole? We used no. Let’s name Thomas Reed.

She asked me to attend.

I did.

Richard still supervised release? Maybe.

Evelyn came.

We sat separate.

Maya did not ask me to stand wedding party.

No performance.

At reception she hugged.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Congratulations.”

No kidney speech.

Good.

Then years later she had child.

Pregnancy monitoring careful.

Kidney transplant recipients can have pregnancy risks. She chose with transplant team.

Healthy daughter after high risk pregnancy.

She named Claire? That would be too much.

She named Sophie.

I became Aunt Claire.

Not second mother.

Then I looked at Sophie and thought:

Maya had a future.

May you like

My kidney helped.

Despite everything, that mattered.
