Chapter 17 - Ethan Was Never the Prize

Ethan asked me to marry him again.
Not because engagement ended legally.
Because everything around first proposal had been contaminated.
He took me to the same coffee shop where we had first met.
No photographers.
No family.
He put the same ring on table.
“I know you already said yes.”
“I did.”
“I want to ask the woman who knows who she is now.”
Corny.
I cried anyway.
“Emma Rebecca Whitmore Vance…”
I raised eyebrow.
He stopped.
“What name are you using?”
“I don’t know.”
“Good start.”
We laughed.
Then:
“Will you marry me when you want to?”
“Yes.”
This time the wording mattered.
Then date.
One year after attack.
Not anniversary exactly.
May.
Small estate north of city.
No connection to family company.
Eighty guests.
Chloe invited?
I did not know.
She said:
“You don’t have to.”
That helped.
I invited.
Not bridesmaid.
Guest.
She accepted.
Then Catherine heard through prison mail from Chloe? Chloe had limited contact. She requested to send wedding letter.
I declined.
Richard too.
No.
Boundaries.
Then trust.
Marriage would vest direct control.
Hudson prepared.
I hired independent counsel.
Prenup.
Ethan insisted separate lawyers.
My shares remain separate.
His assets separate.
Joint assets defined.
No control rights.
No spousal voting proxy.
The exact opposite of Richard’s story.
Then Ethan said:
“I don’t want anyone ever saying I married you for Whitmore.”
I answered:
“People will.”
“Great.”
He laughed.
“Then we ignore.”
Good.
Then company.
I chose one board observer year before taking any seat.
Studied financials.
Visited quarry.
Met unions.
Safety team.
No inherited genius.
Then I discovered one legacy practice I hated.
Whitmore suppliers included Vance Family Management affiliate still receiving fees from old contracts.
Richard's company.
Now under receiver.
Contracts were overpriced.
Board terminated after review.
Not because mine.
Because market.
Then apprenticeship program.
I proposed analysis.
Could it return?
HR found yes with community college partnership.
Board approved pilot.
Named Rebecca Whitmore Apprenticeship Program?
I worried nepotistic memorial.
Employees supported because she founded original.
Okay.
Then Hannah? no.
Chloe attended first ceremony.
She saw Rebecca’s name.
“Do you feel like she replaced Mom?”
I looked.
“No.”
“Do you?”
She thought.
“Sometimes.”
Catherine was Chloe’s mother.
Rebecca was mine.
That difference could hurt.
Then:
“You don’t have to love Rebecca.”
“I know.”
“Or hate Mom because I do sometimes.”
“I don’t hate her.”
“I know.”
Then Chloe confessed she still spoke to Catherine twice monthly.
I felt anger.
Then stopped.
Her relationship.
“Does she blame me?”
“Sometimes.”
I laughed.
“Of course.”
“Then she corrects herself.”
Progress in prison maybe.
No need me involved.
Then Ethan’s mother? We haven't introduced. Fine.
Wedding planning.
I chose to walk alone down aisle.
Not because no father.
Because I wanted.
Then Chloe asked:
“Can I walk part with you?”
I almost said no.
Then we designed:
She walks with me from getting ready room to garden entrance.
Then I continue.
Sister role without giving away.
May you like
That felt right.
Continue to the next part: Emma and Ethan create a marriage contract that proves Richard’s entire fear was fabricated, while Chloe is invited back into the wedding only on terms Emma chooses.
