Chapter 22 - Victor’s Last Appeal
Victor appealed.
Of course.
He argued evidentiary issues.
Trust interpretation.
Admission of ledger.
Sentencing.
Some minor sentencing calculation was corrected.
His convictions remained.
No hidden acquittal.
No dramatic escape.
Then he wrote me.
I had never accepted a letter.
This time Rebecca said:
“It is one page. No threats.”
I read.
Claire,
You destroyed my family.
I almost laughed.
Then:
That is what I told myself for years.
Interesting.
He continued.
Samuel warned me I would borrow tomorrow to protect today.
I was better at business than he was in some ways, and I spent my life trying to prove that meant he was wrong about everything.
Then:
When you found the loans, I saw you as him.
There.
Victor had transferred his father’s judgment onto me.
Then:
I hated that Ethan listened to you because I thought it meant I was losing him.
Did Ethan listen?
Not enough.
Then:
I burned you because I wanted you afraid.
No minimization.
Then:
I did not think about what could happen to the baby until afterward.
That was horrible.
Probably true.
Then:
I am sorry.
No request.
Then the last line:
I do not expect you to answer.
I didn’t.
But I kept the letter for Grace?
No.
Victor’s apology belonged to me, not automatically her.
I gave it to Rebecca for records.
Then Lauren’s relationship with Victor.
She cut contact for years.
Eventually wrote one letter:
I love you. I will not help you rewrite what happened.
Marlene?
No contact after divorce initially.
Later she accepted one monitored phone call when Victor’s health declined.
Not reconciliation.
Closure.
Then Victor reached parole/release? Federal sentence maybe 11 years. He was in his seventies by release. If story can time-jump eventually. We'll do later.
Then the financial trust reached final settlement.
Hale Legacy Trust restored to approximately $36 million through:
Company sale proceeds.
Saguaro recoveries.
Lang funds.
Bank settlements.
Insurance.
Investment growth.
What should have been maybe $45+ without fraud.
Loss remained.
No fantasy full recovery.
Ethan and Lauren each had protected beneficiary interests under independent professional trustee.
Neither controlled whole trust.
Marlene’s spousal account restored separately.
Victor lost trustee status permanently.
No family member could become sole trustee again under court-approved reformation consistent with Samuel’s intent.
That mattered.
The thing Victor abused could not simply be handed to Ethan next.
Then I asked Rebecca:
“Do I have any claim to Ethan’s trust from divorce?”
“Potential marital claims depend structure, but settlement waived most.”
I had already chosen to waive claims to separate inherited property in exchange for clean division and restitution tracing.
I did not want Hale money.
Grace could eventually have whatever lawful inheritance came from Ethan.
That was her relationship.
Not mine.
Then I paid off my townhouse from salary and savings.
