Chapter 13 - Ethan’s Choice

I stopped thinking of Ethan as a victim who became complicit.

That description was too generous.

He had been both.

Victor controlled through money.

Ethan enjoyed being controlled when control paid well.

He signed.

Transferred.

Lied.

Then held me down.

The federal financial case could explain him.

It could not excuse the dining room.

Prosecutors separated those too.

Local assault investigation:

Victor intentionally burned me with a lit cigarette.

Ethan intentionally restrained me while Victor approached.

Video.

Audio.

Witnesses.

Marlene’s warning text.

Ethan’s prior knowledge of confrontation.

Strong.

Victor’s defense suggested:

“The cigarette touched clothing accidentally during an argument.”

Audio:

“Let’s see if the baby’s as pathetic as its mother.”

Hard.

Then Ethan’s attorney proposed plea.

Unlawful restraint.

Assault participation.

Obstruction-related conduct.

Financial conspiracy/false statement counts federally.

He would cooperate.

No trial if accepted.

I submitted a victim statement.

Not sentence demand.

Facts.

I wrote:

Ethan did not suddenly become dangerous on Thanksgiving. He spent years teaching me that every boundary I set was an attack on his family.

Then:

When his father approached me with fire, Ethan’s first instinct was not to protect our daughter. It was to prevent me from resisting.

Our daughter.

We had learned sex at the anatomy scan.

A girl.

I had not announced beyond close friends.

Victor knew.

Ethan knew.

Still.

Then:

I do not want my child taught that fear of a parent is an excuse for helping that parent hurt someone else.

I stopped.

Then wrote:

I also do not want the court pretending Ethan invented this system. Victor did. Ethan chose to participate.

Precise.

Then Lauren’s plea discussions.

Her cooperation was extensive.

She signed one false payroll certification knowingly under pressure.

Accepted questionable payments without verification.

No evidence she knew about bank fraud scale.

Prosecutors considered probation and restitution rather than prison.

Fine.

Marlene.

She signed fake trust witness document.

Made false statements to trust administrator once.

Allowed Marlene Holdings.

She cooperated.

Could face charges.

Her lawyer negotiated.

Fear did not erase.

Then Peter Lang.

More direct fraud.

He notarized a dead man’s signature.

Received hush funds.

Likely criminal sentence.

Then Victor.

No cooperation.

He blamed Dorsey.

Lang.

Ethan.

Me.

Marlene.

Banks.

Inflation.

Everyone.

His attorneys prepared trial.

Then federal agents found Victor’s recorded voice on Michael Dorsey’s phone.

Dorsey had begun secretly recording after threats.

Victor:

“If Claire’s little audit hobby turns into a subpoena, Ethan handles her.”

Dorsey:

“What does that mean?”

Victor:

“He married her. He can shut her up.”

My hands shook.

Date:

Five months before Thanksgiving.

Then:

Dorsey:

“What if she goes federal?”

Victor:

“She won’t.”

He had underestimated me.

Not because I was brilliant.

Because he believed family pressure was stronger than law.

Then the last line:

If she does, Thanksgiving may come early.

I stared.

“What did that mean?”

Dorsey said Victor often used “Thanksgiving” as joke for family confrontation.

Maybe not literal plan.

But enough to show he anticipated forcing me into family pressure.

May you like

Then Thanksgiving came.

And Victor finally acted as if his dining room were still the only court that mattered.
