Mark denied opening the Northbridge feed.
His phone remained in his pocket during Christmas morning.
The house video showed him near the fireplace when Unknown User Seven logged in.
Someone could have used his credentials remotely.
The executive system required a password, facial verification, and a voice phrase.
Mark’s office retained stored samples for virtual meetings.
Stephen Cross helped install the system.
Northbridge could potentially manufacture access through copied recordings.
A login alone did not prove Mark watched.
Then investigators found an earlier session.
Incident One had been viewed under Mark’s account two days before Walter showed the edited clip to the family.
Incident Two had been viewed the same night it occurred.
Mark claimed he never saw the original footage.
The access record said otherwise.
His face authentication file had approved both sessions.
“Did Walter ever ask you to test a video system?” Detective Blake asked.
Mark remembered sitting in his father’s office several times while Walter adjusted a camera.

He did not complain about losing status.
That was another change worth noticing, though not rewarding yet.
Company operations entered independent management so employees kept wages and suppliers continued receiving payment.
Walter’s attorneys warned that exposing Northbridge would destroy Evelyn’s company.
The receiver separated the legitimate products from the trust fraud.
A business did not need abusive leaders to survive.
Lucy returned home two days after Christmas.
We removed the tree.
She did not want to look at gifts.
I packed every unopened box into the garage without asking her to decide immediately.
The living room felt empty.
That was better than pretending the holiday could continue.

“Was she brave?”
“Yes.”
“Was she scared?”
“Yes.”
Children deserve heroes who can also be frightened.
Otherwise, courage becomes another impossible test.
A library employee approached carrying an old envelope found behind the mural frame during the police search.
It contained a memory card.
Evelyn had recorded one final message.
This video differed from the laptop file.
She sat inside the library.
Helen stood beside her.
Dr. Sloan stood near the door.
All three women were alive and cooperating at that moment.
Evelyn placed the red folder on the table.
“Walter believes Northbridge watches children,” she said. “It watches families.”
Helen added:
“The child is only the trigger. The real subject is whichever adult chooses obedience over protection.”
Dr. Sloan looked toward the camera.
“Mark has been evaluated since childhood. Claire became part of the study when she married him. Lucy is the third generation.”
The program measured how abuse passed through family systems.
Walter was both participant and operator.
Northbridge collected data on whether children repeated control, challenged it, or selected partners who could be isolated.
The trust money financed the observation.
Evelyn continued.
“We planned to expose the program after transferring Lucy’s shares. Someone inside Northbridge discovered the amendment.”
A sound came from outside the reading room.
Helen turned off the main camera.
The memory card continued recording audio.
A fourth person entered.
The voice said:
“Lucy does not reach twelve outside the study.”
Evelyn answered:
“You will not touch her.”
The stranger laughed softly.
“I do not need to. Walter will.”
The voice sounded female.
Older.
Familiar enough that Lucy looked toward me.
“Who is that?”
I did not know.
Helen’s face appeared briefly in a reflection before the recording ended.
She looked terrified.
Detective Blake compared the voice with Northbridge conference recordings.
One likely match appeared.
Margaret Hale.
Helen and Evelyn’s mother.
The woman had been legally dead for more than thirty years.
Her voice remained inside recent approval calls through an identity model.
Northbridge may have manufactured it.
Or someone had been speaking under Margaret’s name.
The dead identity controlled the majority ownership trust.
The person behind it could direct Walter, Sloan, Cross, and company executives without appearing publicly.
The final metadata showed the library recording had been copied one month before Evelyn died.
User: Mark Bennett.
Again, Mark’s identity appeared at the exact point where he claimed no knowledge.
This time, the system included a location.
Mark’s childhood bedroom inside Walter’s house.
The room had remained locked since Evelyn’s death.
Police opened it.
Behind the wall, they found a small server still operating.
A live camera feed filled the screen.
It showed our living room.
My house.
The camera angle came from inside Lucy’s smoke detector.
