Chapter 10 - The Test That Continued after Christmas

Police removed seven hidden devices from our house.
One inside Lucy’s smoke detector.
One inside the hallway thermostat.
One facing the kitchen table.
One inside the living room speaker.
Three more near doors and windows.
Walter had installed some during visits.
Others appeared newer.
The newest device entered the house after Lucy’s injury.
Someone had accessed our home while we remained at the hospital.
Security footage showed no forced entry.
Mark’s old door code opened the back lock at two fourteen on Christmas afternoon.
Mark was beside Lucy’s hospital bed at that time.
His identity had become a key used by someone else.
The hidden server inside his childhood bedroom received every feed.
It sent the videos to a private Northbridge archive.
The observer watched me pack the gifts.
Watched Lucy return on crutches.
Watched Mark ask to come home.
Watched me refuse.
The experiment had continued after the slippers.
Walter’s removal became another event to measure.
Northbridge wanted to know whether the family returned to old roles once the visible abuser disappeared.
Detective Blake replaced the cameras with controlled devices under warrant rather than shutting the system down immediately.
Investigators hoped the observer would attempt contact.
For three nights, nothing happened.
On the fourth morning, a message appeared on the hidden server.
Maternal boundary remains strong.
Paternal compliance unstable.
Child attachment shifting toward maternal authority.
Proceed to separation phase.
The language described us without names.
I became maternal authority.
Mark became paternal compliance.
Lucy became child attachment.
No one inside Northbridge had to acknowledge the people behind the categories.
The server attempted to activate another device.
A speaker inside Mark’s apartment.
Police reached him before the audio played.
The stored file used Walter’s voice.
“Your wife is destroying this family. Bring Lucy home.”
The program intended to trigger Mark with the command he had obeyed since childhood.
Protect the family structure.
Distrust the woman naming harm.
Retrieve the child.
Mark listened under supervision.
His hands shook.
Then he asked police to preserve the file.
He did not call me.
He did not drive toward the house.
He did not obey.
That choice did not repair everything.
It interrupted the pattern.
The trust hearing occurred one week before Lucy’s birthday.
Evelyn’s amendment entered preliminary force.
Walter and Northbridge lost temporary control.
The public trust department became interim manager.
Company records remained under audit.
Lucy’s assets stayed protected.
No final ruling had determined the full validity of every document.
Walter faced continuing criminal and civil investigations related to chemical exposure, surveillance, forgery, and the initiative cases.
Dr. Sloan remained missing.
Stephen Cross surrendered his law license temporarily and refused questions through counsel.
Helen entered protective custody after receiving threats against her son.
Ava Ross’s case reopened.
Other families began requesting original footage.
The visible consequences had begun.
The observer remained unknown.
Walter requested permission to send Lucy one final recorded statement.
Lucy refused.
He asked the court to order family therapy.
The request was denied during the protection period.
He had used therapy language as control for too long.
Mark testified publicly about signing documents without reading them, dismissing my warnings, and allowing Walter to define calmness as innocence.
His statement damaged his reputation inside the company.
He gave it anyway.
“I did not poison the slippers,” he said. “I helped create a family where my daughter expected me not to believe her.”
That sentence did not make him heroic.
It made him accountable.
Lucy chose to see him on her twelfth birthday.
We met inside the public library.
No mansion.
No company office.
No gifts.
Mark brought a card containing only three sentences.
I believe you.
I failed you.
I will not ask you to make me feel better about it.
Lucy read it.
Then she placed it inside her backpack.
“Can we play a game?”
Mark nodded.
They played checkers at a small table while I spoke with the interim trustee nearby.
For forty minutes, they were a father and daughter without Walter’s camera deciding what the moment meant.
That evening, the trust transition completed.
The public department assumed voting authority over Evelyn’s shares.
Walter’s income stopped.
Northbridge filed another challenge but failed to block the transfer.
Lucy remained a child.
She did not enter a boardroom.
She did not give a speech.
She ate chocolate cake and watched an old comedy with me.
The victory belonged to ordinary safety.
At nine thirteen, Jenna called.
Police had returned to Walter’s house after the hidden server sent another signal.
The signal opened a sealed compartment beneath the chair where Walter sat during Lucy’s Christmas test.
Inside were original recordings Northbridge had never received.
Walter had kept private insurance against the observer.
The first files documented Stephen Cross and Dr. Sloan.
The next showed Helen arguing with Walter.
Another showed Evelyn discovering the live feed.
The final folder carried one title.
INCIDENT ZERO.
The recording date came from thirty six years earlier.
A little girl stood beside a Christmas tree wearing white pajamas.
She looked about eleven.
An older woman placed soft gray slippers on her feet.
A teenage Walter stood near the doorway holding a camera.
The girl took several steps and screamed.
The older woman checked her watch.
“Be brave,” she said. “Let us see how long you last.”
The little girl collapsed.
Walter did not help her.
He kept filming.
The child’s name appeared on the gift tag.
Evelyn Hale.
Lucy’s grandmother had once received the same test.
The older woman was Margaret Hale, Evelyn and Helen’s mother.
At least, she looked like the woman in old family photographs.
The video continued after Evelyn fell.
A man entered and removed the slippers.
His face remained outside the frame.
Margaret said:
“She failed again.”
The man answered:
“No. Walter watched without intervening. He is the useful one.”
Teenage Walter lowered the camera.
“What do I get?”
The man replied:
“Control, if you keep filming.”
The first test had not been designed to hurt Walter.
It had been designed to identify which child would accept another person’s pain in exchange for approval.
Walter passed.
Evelyn became the victim.
Helen may have been tested separately.
Northbridge grew from that result.
The final seconds showed the man bending toward the camera.
Only his hands appeared.
He wore a company ring bearing the initials NB.
Northbridge existed decades before its official creation.
Detective Blake enhanced the audio.
The man’s voice matched no current suspect.
Then Mark heard the recording.
His face changed.
“That is Grandpa Samuel.”
Walter’s father had supposedly died before Northbridge formed.
He had trained Walter with the heated tool.
He had also helped create the system that selected Walter as observer.
The video ended with Samuel saying:
“One generation creates pain. The next records it. The third learns to call it care.”
A second file began automatically.
The date was Christmas morning, one hour before Lucy opened the slippers.
Walter sat alone in his living room.
He placed his phone against the sugar bowl.
Then he looked toward someone standing outside the frame.
“I will not use the stronger mixture.”
A woman answered.
“You already accepted the trust payment.”
“It could scar her.”
“The injury must survive hospital review.”
Walter stared at the gray slippers.
“You said the objective was incapacity.”
“It is.”
“Whose?”
The woman stepped partly into the mirror behind him.
Her face remained hidden by the angle.
She wore Evelyn’s pearl bracelet, the same one missing after her death.
“Not Lucy’s,” she said.
“Mark’s.”
Walter looked toward the camera.
“What does that mean?”
“If he watches his daughter suffer and still protects you, Northbridge keeps him. If he finally turns against you, Claire becomes the controlling parent and the trust enters public custody.”
“Either result removes me.”
“You were never the beneficiary, Walter. You were the final test.”
The woman left before her face appeared.
Walter remained in the chair.
For the first time, he looked frightened.
Then Lucy entered the room in red plaid pajamas.
He smiled, lifted the slippers, and performed his role anyway.
The unknown woman had wanted Lucy injured to measure whether Mark would repeat Walter’s obedience.
The trust transfer, the company audit, and Walter’s removal may all have been expected outcomes.
Northbridge had not lost control.
It may have been clearing Walter from the system.
Detective Blake searched the pearl bracelet records.
Evelyn left it to Lucy in her will.
Walter claimed it disappeared at the hospital after Evelyn died.
A photograph from Lucy’s birth showed another woman wearing it.
Dr. Avery Sloan.
The image was twelve years old.
Dr. Sloan stood beside Evelyn, Mark, and a newborn Lucy.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
Avery promised the third generation would end the test.
Dr. Sloan may have been the woman directing Walter.
Or someone may have used the bracelet to make us believe she was.
At midnight, Lucy’s new public trust account received an encrypted video.
The sender identified herself as Avery.
Her face never appeared.
“Walter was removed exactly as Evelyn planned,” the voice said. “Do not let Claire believe the public trustee is independent.”
The camera turned toward a room filled with wrapped Christmas gifts.
Each box carried a child’s name.
The nearest gift contained a pair of gray slippers.
A red tag hung from the ribbon.
For Sophie.
Be brave.
The video cut off before investigators could identify the location or determine whether Dr. Sloan was warning us, controlling the next test, or speaking under another stolen identity.
Lucy stood beside me while Detective Blake replayed the final frame.
“Is there another girl?”
“We do not know yet.”
“Will someone believe her?”
I looked at the slippers inside the image.
“Yes.”
“How can you promise?”
“Because this time we know what the gift is for.”
Outside the library, police vehicles moved into the winter night.
Somewhere, another family might still be sitting beside a Christmas tree, believing softness meant safety and calmness meant innocence.
The hidden server sent one final line before disconnecting.
SUBJECT LUCY COMPLETE.
BEGIN MOTHER RESPONSE PHASE.
The next test had not been assigned to another child.
May you like
It had been assigned to me.
Continue to the next part: Claire must uncover who controls Lucy’s new public trustee before Northbridge turns her protection into the final stage of the experiment.
