I hated the phrase:
Your father.
People said:
How does it feel seeing your father convicted?
How does it feel knowing your father tried to kill you?
How does it feel testifying against your father?
As if biology made the crime more mysterious.
Richard was my father.
That mattered because I loved him once.
It did not reduce facts.
At sentencing, I spoke.
Not long.
“When I was eight, my father taught me to fish.”
Richard looked up.
“He held the back of my coat when I leaned over the creek because he was afraid I would fall.”
My voice broke.
“Twenty four years later, he put his hand on that same kind of coat and pushed me toward a mine shaft while I held my daughter.”
Silence.
“I spent months trying to understand when he became a different person.”
Then:
“I don’t think there was one day.”
Greed did not arrive with a siren.
It grew through small permissions.
Hiding an offer.
Calling Mom confused.
Using trust assets.
Forging signatures.
Pressuring Daniel.
Then murder.
“I do not ask this court to destroy him because he destroyed my family.”
I looked at judge.
“I ask you to sentence what he did.”
Richard’s lawyer spoke.
Age sixty.
No prior violent conviction.
Health issues.
Family history.
Financial stress.
Then prosecutor.
Planning.
Child victim.
Attempted concealment.
Separate financial fraud.
Then Richard asked to speak.
“I love my daughter.”
I closed my eyes.
Then:
“I believed Evelyn was destroying everything we built.”
No.
“She gave control to Melissa without understanding business.”
Still excuses.
Then:
“I was trying to save our family.”
The judge interrupted.
“By killing two members of it?”
Richard stopped.
For first time, no language.
Then he looked at me.
“I am sorry.”
Was he?
Maybe.
Not enough.
He received a lengthy prison sentence that made it likely he would spend much of his remaining life in custody, with sentences reflecting both victims and conspiracy.
Not dramatic execution.
Consequences.
Daniel received substantial but shorter term under plea.

She lost notary? She wasn't notary. Fine.
Then trust court.
Could Daniel keep fifteen percent?
Independent trustee petitioned under trust misconduct clause.
Daniel had committed fraud against trust and attempted to kill beneficiaries to alter control.
Judge enforced forfeiture clause after litigation.
His fifteen percent shifted according to amendment:
Half to reclamation trust.
Half proportionally to remaining beneficiaries.
Richard’s lifetime rental income interest was also challenged because of fraud.
Settlement:
Income redirected first to restitution and trust losses during incarceration, remainder preserved only as legally required.
I did not become rich because they went to prison.
The trust became cleaner.
Then Lauren filed divorce from Daniel.
No one blamed her.
She sold their house.
Moved closer to her parents.
No children.
She wrote me one letter:
I should have asked more questions.
I replied:
You did not push us.
Boundaries matter in guilt too.
