Chapter 2

The room fell quiet.

Not because anyone believed Cassidy.

Because everyone was waiting for the punchline.

Brendan leaned back in his chair, swirling the wine in his crystal glass.

"You always did love dramatic exits."

Jessica laughed.

"I was expecting tears."

She glanced at Cassidy's soaked dress.

"Not... whatever this performance is."

Cassidy ignored them.

Water continued dripping from the ends of her dark hair onto the Persian rug.

Her cardigan clung to her skin, and the cold had begun to settle deep into her bones.

She didn't move.

Didn't wipe her face.

Didn't argue.

She simply rested one protective hand over her stomach.

The baby kicked gently.

Cassidy smiled almost imperceptibly.

"I'm okay."

She whispered so quietly that only she could hear it.

Diane picked up her wineglass.

"I suppose we should explain why we invited you."

Cassidy looked up.

"I already know why."

"Oh?"

"You wanted an audience."

Diane smiled.

"I wanted closure."

She slowly sat at the head of the dining table.

"For years..."

She folded her napkin neatly across her lap.

"...my son insisted you were good enough for this family."

She looked directly into Cassidy's eyes.

"I disagreed."

Jessica couldn't hide her satisfaction.

Brendan said nothing.

Diane continued.

"You came from nothing."

Cassidy answered calmly.

"I came from teachers."

"Exactly."

"My father built this family over four generations."

She gestured toward the mansion.

"Everything you see here carries the Whitmore name."

Cassidy looked around the lavish dining room.

"It is beautiful."

"It should be."

Diane smiled proudly.

"Families like ours don't simply become wealthy."

"We stay wealthy."

Brendan finally spoke.

"You should've accepted the divorce settlement."

Cassidy looked at him.

"I accepted exactly what I wanted."

"You walked away with almost nothing."

"I walked away with my peace."

Jessica laughed.

"That's a nice way to say you lost."

Cassidy smiled politely.

"You think I lost?"

Jessica shrugged.

"You certainly didn't win."

The conversation drifted into uncomfortable silence.

Finally Brendan leaned forward.

"I've always wondered something."

Cassidy raised an eyebrow.

"Why didn't you fight harder?"

"For what?"

"The company."

Cassidy looked almost amused.

"You mean Whitmore Global?"

"Yes."

"You spent five years helping build it."

"You were General Counsel."

"You knew every acquisition."

"Every merger."

"Every lawsuit."

"You could've destroyed us."

Cassidy slowly reached for the water glass in front of her.

Ironically...

It was the only clean water she'd touched all evening.

She took a sip.

Then answered.

"I made a promise."

Brendan frowned.

"To who?"

"Your father."

The smile disappeared from Diane's face.

Brendan blinked.

"My father?"

Cassidy nodded.

"The week before he died."

For the first time that evening...

No one laughed.

Everyone in the room knew Richard Whitmore had founded the corporation from a single shipping warehouse forty years earlier.

He had also been the only Whitmore who had ever treated Cassidy like family.

Jessica looked confused.

"I thought he barely knew you."

Cassidy smiled softly.

"He knew me better than anyone."

A memory surfaced.

Richard sitting in his office after another exhausting board meeting.

He had poured two cups of coffee.

Not whiskey.

Not champagne.

Coffee.

Then looked across his desk at Cassidy.

"You're the only lawyer in this building who tells me when I'm wrong."

Cassidy had laughed.

"That's usually a dangerous career move."

Richard smiled.

"It's the only reason this company is still standing."

Brendan interrupted her thoughts.

"My father trusted everyone."

Cassidy quietly shook her head.

"No."

"He trusted very few people."

Diane folded her arms.

"This conversation is pointless."

"I agree."

Cassidy replied.

"So let's end it."

Outside...

Headlights swept across the front windows.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then another.

Jessica frowned.

"Are we expecting someone?"

Walter... no Walter absent. Brendan looked toward the driveway.

"I didn't invite anyone."

The sound of tires crunching across gravel echoed through the estate.

Then came another vehicle.

And another.

Not police.

Large black executive SUVs.

Perfectly identical.

Every one stopped in precise formation outside the mansion.

The laughter disappeared from the room.

Brendan slowly stood.

"What the hell..."

Diane walked toward the window.

There were six vehicles.

All black.

Each displaying discreet corporate security plates.

The lead SUV's headlights switched off simultaneously with the others.

Driver doors opened in perfect synchronization.

Men and women in black executive security suits stepped out wearing discreet earpieces.

Jessica's smile faded.

"Cassidy..."

She looked back.

"...who are those people?"

Cassidy calmly folded her napkin.

"They're right on time."

Brendan forced a laugh.

"You hired security?"

Cassidy didn't answer.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the marble foyer.

The front door opened.

Not kicked.

Not forced.

Opened.

The house staff had already unlocked it.

A tall man with close-cropped hair entered first.

Behind him came eight executive security officers.

No one spoke.

The leader walked directly into the dining room.

His polished shoes stopped beside Cassidy's chair.

He didn't even glance at Brendan.

Didn't acknowledge Diane.

Ignored Jessica completely.

Instead...

He stood perfectly straight.

Placed one hand behind his back.

And addressed the drenched pregnant woman still seated at the table.

"Good evening, Chairwoman Cassidy Brooks."

Every face in the room froze.

Brendan frowned.

"...Chairwoman?"

The security chief nodded respectfully.

"My apologies for the delay, ma'am."

"We arrived as quickly as Protocol Seven required."

Cassidy finally looked up at him.

"Thank you, Chief Carter."

Brendan laughed once.

A short, uncertain laugh.

"Chairwoman of what?"

Cassidy's calm eyes met his.

"The company."

Silence.

He stared at her.

"...What company?"

May you like

Cassidy never blinked.

"The one you think belongs to you."
