Chapter 1

The invitation arrived on a Tuesday morning.
Cassidy Brooks stared at the cream-colored envelope for nearly a full minute before opening it.
The handwriting belonged to Diane Whitmore.
Elegant.
Precise.
Impossible to mistake.
Inside was a single card.
"Brendan and Jessica would love for you to join us for dinner one last time.
It's time we all move forward like adults."
Cassidy almost laughed.
In the twelve months since the divorce, Diane had never once called to ask how she was doing.
Not after losing the marriage.
Not after discovering she was pregnant.
Not after spending three weeks in the hospital because of complications during her second trimester.
Now...
Suddenly...
They wanted to "move forward."
Her hand instinctively rested on her stomach.
The baby kicked gently beneath her cream maternity dress.
"You think I shouldn't go?"
The tiny movement almost felt like an answer.
The Whitmore estate in Greenwich looked exactly as she remembered.
The towering iron gates.
The circular driveway lined with imported maple trees.
The marble fountain Brendan's father had purchased from Italy decades earlier.
Every brick of the mansion radiated old money.
For five years Cassidy had called this place home.
For five years she had tried to earn acceptance from people who had already decided she never belonged.
She wasn't born into wealth.
Her father had been a public-school history teacher.
Her mother worked nights as a nurse.
Cassidy earned scholarships, graduated first in her class from Yale Law School, and built her own career from the ground up.
To Diane...
None of that mattered.
Money inherited was always worth more than success earned.
The front door opened before Cassidy reached it.
A housekeeper offered a polite smile.
"They're waiting in the dining room."
Cassidy nodded.
As she stepped inside, familiar memories hit her harder than expected.
The staircase where Brendan had proposed.
The hallway where they'd hung Christmas stockings.
The library where they'd dreamed about someday reading bedtime stories to their children.
Those dreams belonged to another lifetime.
The dining room glowed beneath crystal chandeliers.
An elegant table had been set for four.
Fine china.
Crystal wine glasses.
Fresh white roses.
At first glance, it almost looked welcoming.
Then Cassidy noticed there wasn't a place card with her name.
Only three settings had been prepared.
Brendan stood when she entered.
He looked exactly the way magazine covers always portrayed successful executives.
Perfectly tailored navy suit.
Expensive watch.
Confident smile.
The same smile that had convinced her he would never betray her.
Now she understood it had always been practiced.
"Cass."
His voice sounded almost warm.
"You look..."
His eyes dropped briefly to her pregnant stomach.
"...healthy."
Cassidy offered a small smile.
"So do you."
Jessica Collins walked over immediately, slipping her arm through Brendan's as though claiming a trophy.
She wore a fitted black cocktail dress that probably cost more than Cassidy had spent furnishing her first apartment after college.
Jessica's smile never reached her eyes.
"I've heard pregnancy really suits you."
Cassidy recognized the insult hidden inside the compliment.
She simply nodded.
"Thank you."
Jessica looked almost disappointed that she hadn't reacted.
Then Diane entered.
Emerald-green silk.
Pearl necklace.
Perfect makeup.
She looked less like someone's mother and more like the hostess of an exclusive charity gala.
"My dear."
She kissed the air beside Cassidy's cheek without making contact.
"I'm so pleased you came."
Cassidy met her gaze.
"You said we should move forward."
"We should."
Diane smiled.
"But first..."
She looked Cassidy slowly up and down.
"...some things need to be cleaned."
Cassidy frowned slightly.
"I'm sorry?"
Diane didn't answer.
Instead, she nodded toward the hallway.
A maid entered carrying a metal bucket.
Condensation dripped from its sides.
Cassidy assumed someone had accidentally brought cleaning supplies into the wrong room.
She even stepped aside to make room.
The maid stopped directly beside Diane.
Without warning...
Diane took the bucket herself.
Cassidy barely had time to stand.
The freezing water crashed over her.
Ice-cold, filthy water exploded across her hair, face, shoulders, and dress.
She gasped as the shock stole her breath.
Dirty water splashed across the polished hardwood floor and soaked the priceless Persian rug beneath her chair.
Her cardigan clung to her skin.
Her long dark hair hung dripping across her face.
Instinctively...
Both hands covered her pregnant belly.
Protecting the only thing that mattered.
For one endless second...
The room was silent.
Then Brendan laughed.
Jessica laughed even harder.
Diane gently placed the empty bucket on the floor.
Smiling sweetly, she tilted her head.
"At least you're clean now."
Jessica lifted her wine glass.
"Most spas charge extra for that."
More laughter.
Cassidy looked slowly around the table.
Not one person seemed ashamed.
Not one person looked shocked by what had just happened.
Which meant...
This hadn't been impulsive.
They had planned it.
They had invited a seven-month-pregnant woman to dinner...
...only to publicly humiliate her.
Water continued dripping from the ends of Cassidy's hair onto the hardwood floor.
She closed her eyes.
Took one slow breath.
Then another.
When she opened them again...
Every trace of humiliation had disappeared.
She calmly reached into her designer handbag.
Brendan chuckled.
"What?"
"You finally going to cry?"
Cassidy didn't answer.
She removed her smartphone.
Unlocked it.
Selected a single contact.
Brendan leaned back in his chair, smiling.
"Oh, this should be good."
Cassidy lifted the phone to her ear.
The call connected after the first ring.
A calm male voice answered immediately.
"Arthur Reynolds."
Cassidy never looked away from Brendan.
Her voice was quiet.
Perfectly controlled.
Only four words.
"Activate Protocol Seven."

Arthur didn't ask a single question.
"Understood, Madam."
The line disconnected.
Cassidy calmly placed the phone on the dining table.
Brendan laughed again.
"Protocol Seven?"
He shook his head.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Cassidy folded her wet hands gently over her baby bump.
She looked at him with complete calm.
"You'll know in about two minutes."
May you like
Outside...
The distant sound of engines echoed through the estate.
