Chapter 23 - Preston Chooses the Girls

At fifty-one, Preston was offered chairmanship of Hale Family Council.

Not Hale Capital board.

A family governance role.

Charles’s death left vacancy.

Years earlier Preston would have taken it before invitation finished.

This time, he declined.

Camille accepted nomination instead.

Preston supported her.

When I asked why, he said:

“I spent half my life using Hale roles to prove I mattered.”

“So?”

“I have an actual job. Actual kids. I don’t need ceremonial crown.”

“You call Camille’s job ceremonial?”

He laughed.

“Tell her I said governance-critical.”

“I will tell her exactly what you said.”

“Lena.”

I smiled.

Then he became serious.

“Ava graduates next month.”

“Yes.”

“I’m coming.”

“I know.”

“Sophie’s research program starts same weekend.”

“Yes.”

“I moved everything.”

I looked at him.

This was man who once missed debate for board meeting.

“Good.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I should have done that years ago.”

“Yes.”

No need soften.

At Ava’s graduation, Preston sat beside me.

When her name was called, he stood first.

Ava graduated in international law and public policy.

Not Hale Capital.

Not family business.

Her choice.

Sophie later pursued biomedical research.

Neither daughter became custodian of Hale dynasty.

That might have bothered Charles once.

May you like

It delighted Preston.

Or maybe he had finally learned delight without ownership.
