Chapter 17 - Ava Stops Visiting

Ava was fourteen when Preston missed her debate championship.

Not because emergency.

Because Hale Capital board meeting ran long.

He had promised to watch by livestream.

She looked at empty participant list before walking onto stage.

He never joined.

She won second place.

Then blocked him for three days.

Preston called me.

“Make her answer.”

“No.”

“She’s a minor.”

“She is fourteen and safe. You can send message.”

“I apologized.”

“She gets to decide timing.”

“You’re encouraging disrespect.”

“No. I’m refusing to force emotional access.”

He went quiet.

Then:

“I screwed up.”

“Yes.”

“What do I do?”

“Ask Dr. Costa.”

He did.

She told him:

“Do not fly over. Do not buy anything. Do not explain board importance. Acknowledge.”

Preston sent Ava a letter.

I missed something you told me mattered. I chose a Hale meeting over a promise to you, which confirms the exact fear I created years ago. I do not have an excuse. I will be here when you want to talk.

Ava ignored.

Three months.

Then Preston came to Lisbon for Sophie’s music recital.

No announcement.

Sat back row.

Afterward, Ava approached.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

“I didn’t want you to feel required to be happy.”

That was a good answer.

She hugged him.

First spontaneous hug since divorce.

Preston cried into her hair.

Ava stepped back and said:

“Don’t make this dramatic.”

May you like

He laughed through tears.

For first time, she sounded like me.
