Chapter 23 - The Last Recording

There was one audio file I had never heard.

Not because police hid.

Because Rachel labeled:

SARAH ONLY IF YOU WANT.

I never wanted.

For thirty years.

Then after Marcus died, Leo asked:

“What is it?”

“I don't know.”

“You’ve never?”

“No.”

“Do you want?”

I was sixty four.

Rachel had been dead longer than she had been alive.

I pressed.

Her voice:

“Sarah, if you’re listening, I guess enough time passed that you’re curious.”

I laughed through tears.

She knew me.

Then:

“I don’t want this recording used as evidence unless needed. It is not about Marcus.”

Good.

“It’s about you.”

I stopped breathing.

“You have spent your entire life trying to fix me.”

I laughed.

“You can’t fix this.”

Then:

“If I die, do not make Leo your punishment.”

I cried.

“Raise him if that’s what happens. Love him. But keep your job. Date people. Be annoying. Take vacations.”

She knew.

Then:

“And please don’t turn my worst week into your whole memory of me.”

That broke.

She told a story from childhood.

We were twelve and ten.

Rachel stole my bike.

Crashed into hydrangeas.

Blamed dog.

There was no dog near.

Then:

“Remember that version too.”

I had forgotten.

Then:

“I am scared right now. But I was not scared my whole life.”

That sentence.

The murder had devoured narrative.

Rachel had been funny.

Impatient.

Terrible cook.

Brilliant designer.

A mother.

Sister.

Wife who once loved Marcus.

A woman who wore white sneakers with everything.

Not navy dress.

Then:

“If Marcus did nothing and I’m being ridiculous, you’re allowed to laugh at me later.”

I laughed.

Then:

“If I’m right, don’t make being right my legacy.”

End.

I sat in kitchen for an hour.

Then Leo came.

“What did she say?”

I handed phone? The file was digital copy now. He listened.

Then he smiled.

“She blamed dog?”

“Yes.”

“You never told.”

“I forgot.”

“That’s what she meant.”

Yes.

We started telling stories.

Not murder.

Rachel once got stuck in hotel elevator and called 911 because she could not find open button.

She hated mushrooms.

She cheated at Monopoly.

She sang badly.

Leo remembered her pancakes.

Nora learned.

The sound at midnight became one story among hundreds.

That was what Rachel wanted.
