Chapter 19 - Sarah’s Life After Rachel

For years people introduced me as:

Rachel’s sister.

Leo’s guardian.

The woman who found phone in casket.

I hated all three eventually.

I had a life before.

I worked as a commercial interior designer.

I had been engaged once, ended.

I liked terrible reality shows.

I hated hiking.

Rachel loved hiking.

After adoption, raising Leo became central.

Not everything.

I kept working.

My mother Diane helped.

We had arguments.

One over whether Leo should visit Marcus as adult.

Diane said never.

I said his choice.

She cried:

“He killed my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“He doesn't deserve grandson.”

“Leo isn't reward.”

That ended.

Diane eventually apologized.

At eighteen, Leo chose not visit.

At twenty four, he did.

Diane struggled.

Then said:

“I love you even if I hate choice.”

Better.

Then my own guilt.

I carried voicemail.

If something strange happens...

For a decade.

Therapist told me:

“You called back.”

“Yes.”

“She didn't answer.”

“I could have driven.”

“You had no specific emergency.”

“She sounded strange.”

“Would you drive to every adult sibling who sounds strange?”

No.

Guilt wants impossible standard.

I stopped.

Not fully.

Then Rachel’s storage letter.

I kept original? Estate returned certified copy, original archived. I kept copy.

At forty five, I shredded it? Maybe not.

I kept because sister words, not evidence.

Then her backup phone.

After case evidence released years later, estate asked.

Leo wanted.

We consulted therapist.

He kept but removed battery? It was dead. He put in memory box with Captain.

Not as haunted artifact.

At eighteen, he asked to hear midnight recording again.

We did.

Rachel’s voice.

He cried.

Then:

“She sounds scared.”

“Yes.”

“She sounds smart.”

“Yes.”

“She sounds like Mom.”

Yes.

He did not hear ghost.

He heard person.

Then brass key.

Police returned after storage emptied.

Leo kept until adult.

At twenty one, he put on keychain? Maybe too grim. He instead donated/discarded.

He said:

“It opened one thing.”

No need carry.

We gave to storage manager? No.

Threw away.

Then insurance money.

At twenty five, trust began distributions under Rachel’s plan.

Not all at once.

He used some for down payment.

Some invested.

No flashy.

He became bridge engineer.

Maybe nice.

Then relationships.

He married at twenty nine to Emma Shaw, a teacher.

He told her family history before engagement.

She asked:

“Do you want your dad invited?”

Prison.

No.

Marcus sent card through prison approved.

Wedding had an empty place? No.

No memorial drama.

We had photos of Rachel at memory table.

Leo carried Captain? No.

Maybe too childish.

He kept bear at home.

Then his first child.

A daughter, Rachel Diane Hale? Could be heavy. He named Nora Rachel Bennett.

Middle Rachel.

Nice.

Then he sent Marcus photo.

Marcus cried in letter.

No manipulation.

Then Leo asked me:

“Are you Grandma?”

“I am Aunt Sarah.”

Nora called me Grandma Sarah eventually.

Fine.

Family titles evolve.

Then Diane died peacefully in her eighties.

No unresolved.

Marcus still prison.

He sent condolence to Leo.

No funeral attendance.

Then I started thinking about ending story not at verdict, but after all roles closed.

Need Chapters 20-25.
