Chapter 2 - The Camera Laura Thought Was Broken

The television showed the hallway from the previous afternoon.

The timestamp read 4:17 p.m.

Sophie appeared first.

She carried a glass of juice with both hands.

She walked slowly because she was trying not to spill it.

Laura followed behind her.

Even through the silent footage, Daniel could see the tension in Sophie’s shoulders.

The glass slipped.

Juice splashed across the hardwood floor.

Sophie froze.

Laura stopped moving.

For two seconds, nothing happened.

Then Laura grabbed Sophie’s upper arm.

She pulled her so hard that the child nearly fell.

Daniel heard Sophie gasp beside him.

The recording had audio.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

Laura’s recorded voice came through the speakers.

“You are always sorry after you ruin something.”

“I can clean it.”

“You never learn.”

Laura dragged Sophie toward the bedroom.

Sophie tried to keep up.

At the doorway, Laura shoved her.

The child’s back struck the brass doorknob.

The impact echoed through the living room.

Sophie collapsed onto the floor.

Daniel felt his vision narrow.

On the recording, Laura stood over their daughter.

“Stop crying.”

Sophie tried to breathe.

“My back hurts.”

“You did that to yourself.”

“I didn’t.”

Laura pointed toward the camera.

“Your father will believe me.”

The video stopped.

Daniel lowered the remote.

Nobody spoke.

Sophie stared at the floor.

Laura folded her arms.

“It looks worse than it was.”

Daniel slowly turned.

“You pushed her into a metal doorknob.”

“She was out of control.”

“She spilled juice.”

“She disrespected me.”

“She is eight.”

Laura’s expression hardened.

“You are never here.”

The accusation landed exactly where she intended.

Daniel traveled frequently.

He worked long hours.

He missed school events and family dinners.

Laura knew he carried guilt about it.

For years, she used that guilt to end arguments.

“You leave me to handle everything,” she continued. “Then you come home and judge one moment.”

Daniel looked at Sophie.

“Was this one moment?”

Sophie’s silence answered.

He crouched beside her.

“Has Mom hurt you before?”

Laura stepped forward.

“Do not interrogate her.”

Daniel raised one hand.

“Stay where you are.”

His voice remained quiet.

Laura stopped.

Sophie began trembling.

Daniel softened immediately.

“You can tell me the truth.”

She looked toward Laura.

Daniel moved slightly so his body blocked her view.

Sophie whispered, “Sometimes.”

“How many times?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel felt sick.

“Did she hit you?”

“Not with her hand.”

“What did she use?”

Sophie stared at her pajama sleeve.

“The hairbrush.”

Laura laughed sharply.

“She is making things up now.”

Daniel opened the security application again.

He searched earlier dates.

The recordings had been stored automatically in the cloud.

He selected one from two weeks earlier.

The kitchen appeared.

Laura stood beside Sophie at the table.

The girl struggled with math homework.

Laura slapped the pencil from her hand.

“You make me look like a bad mother.”

Sophie cried.

“I’m trying.”

Laura grabbed the back of her chair and pulled it away.

Sophie fell onto the floor.

Another date.

Laura locked Sophie inside the dark pantry for twenty minutes because she refused to finish dinner.

Another.

Laura held the child’s face toward a mirror and told her she looked weak when she cried.

Daniel stopped the footage.

He could not watch more.

Sophie had been living inside fear while he sent cheerful messages from airports.

He looked at Laura.

“How long?”

Laura’s confidence began cracking.

“I disciplined her.”

“You abused her.”

“That word is ridiculous.”

Daniel lifted his phone.

“I am calling the police.”

Laura’s face changed instantly.

“You cannot be serious.”

“I have video.”

“You are going to destroy this family.”

Daniel looked toward Sophie.

“No. I am trying to save what is left of it.”

Laura moved toward the front door.

Daniel blocked her path.

“You are not leaving with her.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She is afraid of you.”

“She is confused because you are manipulating her.”

Sophie stepped behind Daniel again.

Laura saw the movement.

For the first time, panic appeared in her eyes.

“You turned her against me.”

Daniel dialed emergency services.

“My eight year old daughter has been physically abused by her mother. I have security footage and visible injuries.”

The dispatcher instructed him to remain calm and keep everyone separated.

Laura grabbed her shopping bags.

“I will stay with my sister.”

Daniel looked at the door.

“You can explain that to the officers.”

She stared at him.

“You would really let strangers arrest your wife?”

Daniel looked at Sophie’s frightened face.

“You stopped being the person I trusted the moment you taught our daughter to fear home.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Laura moved toward the hallway camera.

Daniel stepped between her and the device.

“You are too late.”

She looked toward the television.

The paused image showed Sophie on the pantry floor.

Laura’s voice dropped.

“If the police see everything, I will lose her.”

Daniel answered quietly.

“You should have thought about that before you hurt her.”

A hard knock sounded at the front door.

Sophie gripped his hand.

“Dad, will they take me away?”

Daniel knelt beside her.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I am staying with you.”

She searched his face.

Then she nodded.

For the first time that evening, she believed him.

Continue to the next part: Police will examine the full archive, but another camera will reveal that Laura was not acting alone and that someone else knew what Sophie was enduring.
