Chapter 1 - The Bruise Behind the Pajamas

Daniel Carter knew something was wrong before Sophie said a word.

He had returned from a three day business trip almost four hours earlier than planned.

His navy tie hung loose around his collar. His suitcase remained beside the front door. He expected Sophie to run toward him the moment she heard his keys.

She always did.

Usually, she shouted his name from the hallway before throwing herself into his arms.

That evening, the house remained silent.

No television.

No music from Sophie’s bedroom.

No sound from the kitchen.

Only the quiet hum of the heating system beneath the warm evening light.

Daniel placed his phone on the entry table.

“Sophie?”

A bedroom door opened slowly.

His eight year old daughter stood half hidden behind it.

Her long blonde hair was messy from sleep. She wore light pink pajamas even though it was not yet bedtime.

She looked smaller than he remembered.

Daniel smiled gently.

“There’s my girl.”

Sophie tried to smile back.

Then she moved toward him with one hand pressed against her lower back.

Daniel’s expression changed immediately.

“What happened?”

Sophie stopped several feet away.

“Nothing.”

“You’re holding your back.”

“I’m okay.”

Daniel crouched so they were at the same height.

“You never have to pretend with me.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the front door.

Daniel noticed.

“Is Mom home?”

Sophie shook her head.

“She went shopping.”

He kept his voice soft.

“Tell me what happened.”

Sophie swallowed.

“Dad, my back hurts so much.”

His heartbeat quickened.

“Did you fall?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Mom told me not to tell you.”

Every part of Daniel became still.

Not calm.

Focused.

He gently reached for her hand.

“You are not in trouble.”

Sophie stepped closer.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

She began crying.

“She said you would get angry at me.”

“Why would I be angry?”

“Because I made her upset.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What did you do?”

“I spilled juice.”

“That’s all?”

Sophie nodded.

Daniel guided her toward the couch.

“Can I look at your back?”

She hesitated.

Then she turned around and slowly lifted the back of her pajama shirt.

A dark purple bruise covered the skin near her spine.

The shape was round.

Raised.

Almost exact.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

At the brass doorknob on Sophie’s bedroom door.

The size matched.

His hands tightened into fists.

He forced them open.

Sophie looked over her shoulder.

“Are you mad?”

“Not at you.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Mom said I pushed myself into the door.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you?”

Sophie shook her head.

“She grabbed me.”

His breathing changed.

“Where?”

“My arm.”

“Then what happened?”

“She pushed me into my room.”

Daniel struggled to keep his voice steady.

“Did your back hit the doorknob?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said it was because I never listen.”

Daniel gently lowered her shirt.

“None of this is your fault.”

Sophie immediately grabbed the back of his jacket.

She pressed her face against him.

Daniel held her carefully, afraid of touching the bruise.

He had spent years believing Laura was strict because she worried too much.

She corrected Sophie’s posture.

Her homework.

Her clothes.

The way she spoke at dinner.

Daniel thought Laura wanted their daughter to succeed.

Now every memory began changing.

The sudden silence whenever he entered a room.

Sophie apologizing too quickly.

The way she watched her mother’s face before answering simple questions.

Daniel looked toward the bookshelf near the hallway.

A small security camera was mounted above it.

He installed the system after several neighborhood burglaries.

Laura complained about the cameras but eventually stopped mentioning them.

Daniel reached for his phone.

The security application opened.

Hallway camera.

Kitchen camera.

Front entrance.

All appeared online.

He selected the hallway recording from the previous afternoon.

Before he could play it, the front door opened.

Laura entered carrying several luxury shopping bags.

She smiled when she saw Daniel.

“You’re home early.”

Then she noticed Sophie beside him.

The smile disappeared.

Daniel stood slowly.

Laura placed the bags down.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“You tell me.”

Laura’s eyes moved toward Sophie.

The child immediately stepped behind her father.

Laura recovered quickly.

“She fell.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Children fall,” she continued. “You know how dramatic Sophie gets.”

Sophie’s fingers tightened around his jacket.

Daniel raised his phone.

Laura followed his gaze toward the security camera.

The color left her face.

“That camera hasn’t worked in weeks.”

Daniel looked at the green status light on his screen.

“Yes, it has.”

Laura stepped closer.

“Daniel, do not upset her more.”

He picked up the television remote.

“We are going to see what happened.”

The television turned black.

A timestamp appeared.

Laura moved toward the screen.

Daniel stepped between her and Sophie.

The recording began.

And before the first image appeared, Laura whispered something that confirmed his worst fear.

“Please do not play it in front of her.”

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“Why not?”

May you like

Laura had no answer.

Continue to the next part: Daniel will watch the hallway recording and discover that the bruise on Sophie’s back was only one part of what happened while he was away.
