Chapter 24 - Sarah’s Name

Before college, Lily asked to visit Sarah’s grave alone.

I drove.

Waited in car.

Twenty minutes.

She returned.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“Private.”

Fair.

Then she asked:

“Can I tell you one thing?”

“Yes.”

“I told Mom you believed me.”

My chest tightened.

“Thank you.”

“She probably already knows.”

“Maybe.”

We drove.

At home, a certified envelope waited.

Final discharge of restitution administration.

Vanessa’s financial restitution to Sarah’s estate had been paid through seized funds, prison earnings, sale of remaining assets, and settlement.

No more open civil claim.

The house sale proceeds and Sarah’s estate accounting were settled years earlier.

No hidden money.

No unknown victim.

No second conspirator.

Kara Flynn had cooperated and was never charged because she did not participate.

Linda remained neighbor friend until we moved.

Dr. Brooks still sent Lily birthday cards for several years.

Nurse Emily once saw us at grocery store and cried.

Life moved.

Vanessa remained incarcerated.

Her projected release date was years away.

Any future release would include supervision and permanent no contact conditions unless a court ever changed them, which neither Lily nor I intended to request.

Sarah’s death certificate had been amended long ago.

Cause and manner finalized.

The legal record reflected what happened.

Not murder.

Not “she just got sick.”

Involuntary manslaughter caused by reckless medication administration during severe illness.

That language mattered because it was accurate.

I had once thought accuracy would feel emotionally insufficient.

May you like

It did not.

Truth strong enough to survive challenge was better than a dramatic word I could not prove.
