Vanessa appealed on multiple grounds.
Cloud search scope.
Admission of Sarah’s recordings.
Sufficiency of evidence for manslaughter.
Child medication evidence.
The appellate court took over a year.
I stopped checking daily.
Lawyers notified.
The result:
Core convictions affirmed.
One evidentiary ruling deemed harmless even if questionable.
One financial count merged.
Sentence adjusted by less than a year administratively but effective incarceration remained substantial.
No new trial.
No release.
The manslaughter conviction stayed.
Child abuse stayed.
Unlawful confinement stayed.
Financial fraud stayed.
That closed legal uncertainty.
Vanessa later sent a letter through prison legal mail.
To me.
I did not open for months.
Eventually therapist asked:
“What do you want?”
“To know.”
So I read.
She wrote:
Michael,
I know you think I planned all of this. I didn’t plan Sarah’s death. I wanted her to rest. I wanted her to stop fighting every decision. I convinced myself I knew better because she was sick.
I stopped.
That sounded consistent with verdict.
Not intent to kill.
Control.
Then:
When she died, I was terrified. I knew the medicine had mattered, and I knew if I told you, you would hate me. So I stayed close.
There.
Admission beyond trial? Could have post-conviction implications. I sent letter to attorney, not hide.
She continued:
I loved you before she died. I hated that she had you even when she treated everyone terribly.
Sarah did not treat everyone terribly.
She was sick.
Angry.
Scared.
Vanessa’s resentment remained.
Then:
With Lily, I thought if I could make her stop talking about the mug, we could still have a family. I did not mean to hurt her as badly as I did.
No apology that understood.
Only consequences.
I stopped.
Did not show Lily.
Not then.
Attorney provided to prosecution/post-conviction file, but appeal already resolved. No new charge needed.
The letter clarified motive:
Vanessa did not set out to kill Sarah.
She decided she knew better.
She gave medication after being told not to.
Sarah died.
Then Vanessa concealed because truth threatened the life she wanted.
Years later, when Lily remembered, Vanessa used the same tool.
Control.
Silence.
Medication.
Confinement.
Not random escalation.
Pattern.
That was the final major twist.
The same need that contributed to Sarah’s death later endangered Lily.
