Chapter 5 - THE WALL HER FATHER NEVER FINISHED
Emma’s childhood home stood empty in Oak Park.
After Daniel died, the property passed through probate and was eventually rented. The current owners were renovating before selling it.
One note in Daniel’s ledger mentioned:
EMMA’S HEIGHT MARKS. DINING ROOM. BEHIND THE LAST SUMMER.
Emma understood immediately.
Her father had measured her height against the dining room wall every birthday.
The final mark was made during the summer before his death.
Federal agents obtained permission to search the property.
Emma insisted on being present.
Dominic did not object.
He waited outside with Detective Monroe while technicians examined the dining room.
Behind a section of old molding, they found a narrow cavity.
It was empty.
Fresh tool marks covered the wood.
Someone had reached it first.
A contractor working at the house had disappeared that morning.
Security footage showed him carrying a metal case to a gray van.
The van belonged to a Russo real estate company controlled by Luca.
Emma stood in the room where her father once measured her against the wall.
“He knew they might kill him.”
Dominic remained near the doorway.
“Yes.”
“He still went to work.”
“He believed evidence could protect people.”
“It did not protect him.”
“No.”
Dominic did not turn Daniel into a hero whose death solved everything.
The truth was uglier.
Daniel made dangerous choices.
He trusted the wrong people.
He hid evidence inside his daughter’s belongings without her consent.
He placed Emma near danger even while trying to protect her from it.
Emma touched the faded pencil mark bearing her name.
“I am angry at him.”
“You have every right.”
“You expected me to defend him.”
“No.”
Dominic looked toward the empty wall.
“Dead fathers are still capable of mistakes.”
The missing archive surfaced twenty four hours later.
The contractor attempted to cross into Canada.
Border officers found the metal case inside his vehicle.
It contained original financial records, photographs, and recordings made by Dominic’s father.
One recording captured Luca discussing Daniel’s death.
Another captured him ordering medication changes before Dominic’s father suffered fatal heart failure.
The archive also contained evidence against Dominic.
Illegal loans.
Payments to violent collectors.
Officials bribed to protect Russo businesses.
Dominic listened to the recordings with his attorney present.
Emma watched his expression harden.
“You knew some of this,” she said.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I knew my companies used threats to collect debts. I knew officials accepted money. I told myself I was maintaining order.”
“Did people get hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Did you order it?”
“Sometimes.”
Emma stepped away from him.
The answer frightened her more than any rumor.
Dominic did not follow.
“I paid for your groceries,” he said quietly. “That did not make me good.”
“No.”
“Protecting you from Luca does not erase anyone I harmed.”
“No.”
“What happens now?”
“You give investigators everything.”
“I already have.”
“And you accept what follows.”
Dominic nodded.
His attorney warned that cooperation would not guarantee immunity.
Dominic agreed to surrender control of the businesses, provide testimony, and plead guilty to charges supported by his own records.
He requested protection for employees uninvolved in crimes and restitution for families harmed by his collection operations.
Prosecutors made no promises beyond considering lawful cooperation.
Emma looked at him.
“You are giving up the entire empire.”
“It was never mine in the way I believed.”
“Then what did the key belong to?”
Dominic looked toward Daniel’s archive.
“Truth.”
Luca was arrested three days later in a private medical clinic owned by one of his shell companies.
He had undergone cosmetic procedures and prepared documents for international travel.
He was taken alive.
Dominic did not see him.
Emma did not attend the arrest.
