Chapter 4 - THE UNCLE WHO CONTROLLED THE CITY FROM CHARITY BALLROOMS
Anthony Vale began cooperating after investigators showed him the evidence from Daniel’s vault.
He admitted that Luca Russo ordered Daniel followed.
Daniel had discovered the financial network and planned to meet Dominic’s father.
Anthony was told to retrieve the storage drives.
“I did not cause the crash,” he insisted.
“Who did?” Detective Monroe asked.
“A police vehicle forced him from the road.”
“Which officer?”
Anthony named retired commander Patrick Sloan.
Sloan had signed the original accident report.
He later purchased a lake house through a company listed in Daniel’s ledger.
Anthony arrived after the crash, searched Daniel’s vehicle, and found nothing.
He assumed the evidence had been destroyed.
For nine years, Luca believed the key remained hidden somewhere with Emma.
“Why wait until now?” Emma asked.
“Daniel’s old vault company announced a records migration,” Anthony said. “Dormant box numbers were sent to registered contacts. Luca intercepted the notice.”
Someone photographed Emma outside her apartment.
Someone searched her employment records.
Someone manipulated her bank accounts.
Her card had not declined because she was simply poor.
The available balance had been frozen by a fraudulent debt claim filed through a company connected to Luca.
The goal was to force her into desperation.
Eviction.
Debt.
A search for anything valuable her father left behind.
“They wanted me to find the key for them,” Emma said.
Anthony nodded.
“And Dominic?”
“They knew he had been tracking unusual payments inside his businesses. Luca wanted you visible near him so each of you would suspect the other.”
Emma remembered the supermarket.
“Did Dominic know I would be there?”
“No.”
Dominic had followed one of Luca’s couriers to Westbridge Market. The courier disappeared through a rear exit moments before Emma’s card declined.
Dominic saw her humiliation by accident.
He learned her identity only after asking her name.
Their meeting had not been planned.
Everything around it had.
That evening, Dominic received a black envelope at his mansion.
Inside was a photograph of his father lying dead in a hospital bed.
The official cause had been heart failure.
A second photograph showed an empty medication vial.
Luca called from a blocked number.
“You have Daniel’s key.”
Dominic activated a recorder while federal agents traced the call.
“The key is with investigators.”
Luca laughed.
“You always did confuse surrender with morality.”
“You killed my father.”
“I corrected a succession problem.”
Emma listened from another room with Detective Monroe.
Dominic’s face did not change.
“What do you want?”
“The original ledger and the drives.”
“You know they have been copied.”
“I want Emma Hale.”
Dominic’s composure fractured.
“No.”
“Her father created the problem. She can close it.”
“You will never touch her.”
“There is the Russo blood.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
Luca continued.
“Bring her to Pier Nineteen before midnight, or I release records proving your own crimes to every agency in the country.”
Dominic looked toward the federal agents.
“Release them.”
Silence.
“You heard me.”
“You would sacrifice your empire?”
“It was never worth her life.”
Emma entered the room after the call ended.
“You do not get to decide whether I participate.”
Dominic turned toward her.
“He asked for you.”
“I heard him.”
“You are not going.”
“You just told him the evidence belongs to investigators.”
“It does.”
“Then let the investigators decide the operation.”
Dominic moved closer.
“This is not one of your accounting problems.”
“And I am not one of your possessions.”
The room became silent.
Dominic’s voice lowered.
“If he takes you, he will kill you.”
“If you hide me while deciding everything alone, you are still using fear to control me.”
He looked at her for a long time.
Then stepped back.
Detective Monroe proposed a controlled operation.
Emma would not go to the pier physically.
Her voice would be used during a monitored call while agents traced Luca’s response. A decoy vehicle would carry false copies of the ledger.
Dominic wanted to be inside the vehicle.
Agents refused.
His criminal history and emotional involvement made him a liability.
For the first time, Dominic accepted an order from someone he could not intimidate.
He remained in the command room beside Emma.
At midnight, the decoy vehicle reached Pier Nineteen.
Luca’s men surrounded it.
Federal agents moved in.
Gunfire erupted after one man fired at police.
Luca was not there.
The entire meeting had been a test.
While everyone focused on the pier, someone entered the hospital where Anthony was being held under guard.
The intruder carried credentials belonging to a federal contractor.
Anthony survived the poisoning attempt because a nurse noticed the wrong medication label.
The contractor was arrested.
His phone contained a message scheduled for Luca.
VALE FAILED. EMMA STILL HAS ACCESS.
Emma read it.
“Access to what?”
Dominic looked toward Daniel’s ledger.
