Chapter 12 - What He Wanted Me to Sign

The fake estate restatement was not the most important document.
Neither was Gamma succession.
Inside Richard’s files, investigators found a shareholder protection agreement.
Title intentionally boring.
Employee Security Distribution Deferral.
If signed, it postponed release of CWH Legacy shares for ten years.
Reason:
Market stability.
Tax efficiency.
National security review.
All plausible.
Beneficiary consequence:
Employees received nothing.
During the deferral, continuity trustees could negotiate settlement of Meridian ownership disputes.
Richard expected to control that negotiation.
His hidden Meridian stake would survive.
Maybe grow.
He asked me to sign versions of the document three times during pregnancy.
I remembered.
He called them routine family office updates.
I refused because Naomi had told me not to sign anything related to legacy assets until we completed a full review.
Richard became colder after each refusal.
I thought he resented my distrust.
He feared a deadline.
My child’s birth would release billions.
His crimes.
My father’s settlement.
Avalon provenance.
Everything.
I was not personally the fortune he wanted to inherit.
I was the signature standing between him and preserving the fortune he already stole.
That made his helicopter sentence exact.
You should have signed everything.
Not romantic betrayal turned murder.
Financial desperation.
Control.
Then Richard requested a proffer meeting.
He offered details about Meridian in exchange for consideration.
Again, not immunity guaranteed.
His attorney claimed Richard did not intend to kill me until Beta’s abort message.
Before that, plan was to take me to Avalon Ridge and pressure me into signing the deferral.
Using what pressure?
He had prepared another document.
Medical emergency certification.
If I refused at Avalon, he planned to trigger an aircraft incident story.
Claim I suffered panic.
Have a cooperating physician declare me temporarily unstable.
Then use trustee authority.
Who was the physician?
Dr. Paul Kent?
No.
Clinic administrator.
Not physician.
Julian Ross had contacted Dr. Marcus Reed, a concierge psychiatrist used by several executives.
Marcus never met me.
Richard sent him selected messages describing pregnancy anxiety.
Marcus drafted an emergency assessment template but refused to sign without examination.
That part of the plan stalled.
So Richard changed strategy.
Again.
When Beta aborted succession, he concluded there would be no legal path before birth.
He pushed me.
His attorney insisted the shove was impulsive.
The flight footage showed Richard moving the safety equipment away from the door before asking me closer.
Prepared.
He had disabled the standard passenger restraint.
I had noticed.
That was why I used my hidden tether.
Months of suspicion saved me.
Could I have prevented the entire incident by confronting him earlier?
Maybe.
That question haunted me.
Naomi would not let it become blame.
“You prepared because you had enough evidence to fear him.”
“I could have left.”
“Yes.”
“I stayed.”
“To learn the truth.”
“Was that stupid?”
“Maybe risky.”
She looked directly at me.
“Risky is not consent to murder.”
I needed that sentence.
Still, I changed how I understood my own strategy.
I had wanted truth to reveal itself.
Truth nearly killed me.
Preparation is not the same as safety.
The board removed Richard from all Hayes roles.
His spouse access terminated.
My divorce petition filed while I remained under medical observation.
No dramatic confrontation.
No demand for explanation.
Evidence had already explained enough.
Richard’s assets connected to Meridian froze under litigation.
Not all personal wealth.
Only disputed holdings and certain accounts.
Due process.
The helicopter pilot, James Nolan, admitted Richard offered him two hundred thousand dollars for an unlogged coastal route.
James claimed he did not know murder was planned.
He knew the flight plan was false.
He accepted money.
Then cooperated when Richard reached for the controls.
Different responsibility.
The rescue aircraft footage became central.
Adrian had arrived because my panic beacon transmitted to Hayes security.
Why was his helicopter already airborne?
He had been conducting a nearby training flight.
Convenient.
Real.
Not every coincidence hid conspiracy.
Then the employee trust issue went to the board.
Should employees be told immediately?
Yes.
But carefully.
Legal verification first.
Tax review.
Meridian litigation.
We did not announce billions before confirming distribution mechanics.
That took weeks.
My pregnancy continued under tighter medical supervision.
No helicopter.
No isolated travel.
No Richard.
One afternoon, I felt my baby kick while Naomi reviewed trust papers.
I laughed.
“What?”
“She keeps interrupting corporate governance.”
Naomi smiled.
“Excellent training.”
We had learned the baby was a girl.
I had not told Richard.
He would learn through legal channels if necessary.
The trust documents used descendant.
No gender mattered.
Then Evelyn called.
Her health had worsened.
She wanted one last meeting.
At hospice, she gave me a sealed envelope from my father.
Charles wrote it shortly before death.
Amelia,
If Richard ever tries to stop the employee release, do not assume he is acting alone.
My stomach tightened.
The letter continued.
The Meridian settlement had one other beneficiary.
Someone inside our family.
Not Richard.
Not me.
May you like
And Dad believed that person would lose everything when Gamma activated.
Continue to the next part: Richard was not the only member of Amelia’s family whose hidden fortune depended on stopping her child’s succession.
