Chapter 11 - Evelyn’s Override

Evelyn did not deny it.
“I attempted an override.”
“Why?”
“To test whether Richard had already compromised Beta.”
“That is not what the log says.”
The request:
TEMPORARY ADULT GAMMA RESTORATION.
Proposed holder:
AMELIA HAYES.
She tried to make me Gamma again.
Exactly what Simon wanted.
“Why?”
“Because I was dying.”
There it was.
Human motive beneath architecture.
Evelyn feared leaving Avalon without an adult root holder.
She distrusted Simon.
Richard.
The trustees.
Even my father’s descendant design.
So she decided maybe Charles had been wrong.
She tried to restore me.
Avalon rejected the request.
Required descendant preservation board.
No such board existed yet.
“Did Richard know?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Beta activity generated a system alert to continuity trustees.”
Richard saw her attempt.
He learned that if Evelyn could restore me, then he might coerce me into granting access after all.
The helicopter plan began soon afterward.
Evelyn’s attempt did not cause Richard’s violence.
It gave him information he exploited.
She knew that.
“I thought I could fix Charles’s mistake.”
“By changing my role without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone keeps doing that.”
“I know.”
No grand villain.
A series of people who believed technical complexity justified excluding the person whose life it governed.
I turned to Simon.
He had been allowed into the supervised session because investigators needed architecture explanations.
“Did you encourage Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Richard?”
“I told continuity trustees a Gamma restoration was under consideration.”
“Why include him?”
“Because legally he was one.”
“You knew he wanted Avalon.”
“I knew he wanted influence.”
“You knew about Northstar.”
Simon looked down.
“Yes.”
“Then you handed him information.”
“Yes.”
He accepted responsibility more easily than most.
That did not reduce it.
The archive proved Richard’s theft from Hayes.
Enough to trigger civil and federal investigations into Meridian Defense Logic.
Richard’s one point four billion stake froze.
Meridian’s board launched independent review.
Federal agencies examined whether government contracts relied on improperly obtained technology.
The scandal became much larger than our marriage.
I hated that my attempted murder turned into a corporate headline.
Pregnant heiress survives helicopter attack tied to billion dollar cyber theft.
The press made me a symbol.
I refused interviews.
My child was not content.
My marriage was not entertainment.
Then investigators found another surprise.
Richard was not Meridian’s largest hidden beneficiary.
A second trust held nearly twice his economic interest.
Beneficiary sealed.
Provenance payments connected to an entity called CWH Legacy.
Initials.
Charles Whitmore Hayes.
My father.
I stared at the record.
“No.”
Naomi said nothing.
My father had profited from Meridian too?
Maybe.
The trust could have another meaning.
We traced it.
CWH Legacy was created by my father after Northstar’s attempted extraction.
Funding:
Settlement payments from Vale Meridian.
Holdings:
Early Meridian shares.
Why own shares in a company built on stolen Hayes architecture?
Evelyn answered.
“Because Charles settled.”
“With Richard?”
“With Northstar.”
Instead of suing publicly and exposing Avalon, Dad forced Northstar to grant Hayes aligned trust equity in any derivative commercialization.
He chose money and secrecy over confrontation.
Meridian later grew enormous.
CWH Legacy’s stake became worth billions.
Who inherited it?
Not me.
Beneficiary:
Hayes Advanced Systems Employee Security Trust.
Thousands of employees indirectly.
My father had turned the settlement into an employee fund.
That sounded noble.
Except one problem.
Nobody at Hayes knew the trust existed.
No distributions had ever occurred.
Trustee:
Simon Vale.
I looked at him.
“You control billions for employees?”
Simon looked exhausted.
“On paper.”
“Where is the money?”
“Still in Meridian shares.”
“Why no distributions?”
“Because distributing would reveal the technology settlement and Avalon.”
Again.
Protect secrecy.
Employees unknowingly owned value they never received.
Richard knew.
If he erased provenance and consolidated Meridian ownership, he could potentially challenge CWH Legacy’s claim and capture more value.
His motive grew.
Simon’s secrecy had helped him by keeping the employee trust invisible.
The people everyone claimed to protect remained the least informed.
Then Naomi found a scheduled transaction.
CWH Legacy shares were set to transfer into Hayes Employee Security Trust upon one event.
Gamma activation.
My child’s birth.
My baby would not own the shares.
Birth simply triggered the long delayed employee distribution.
That meant Richard’s window closed for another reason.
Once the baby was born, billions in Meridian value would begin moving toward Hayes employees, making his theft nearly impossible to hide.
The helicopter attack was not only before a trust change.
It was before a financial release affecting thousands of people.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Charles designed birth as the trigger because he wanted the next generation to begin with repayment.”
I stared at the screen.
And saw one more line.
DISTRIBUTION HOLD AUTHORITY:
AMELIA HAYES.
My signature could stop the employee release.
Richard did not need me dead.
He needed either my death before birth or my signature.
That explained his final words before pushing me.
May you like
You should have signed everything.
Continue to the next part: The documents Richard wanted Amelia to sign would have stopped billions from reaching Hayes employees when her child was born.
