Chapter 3

Ethan excused himself and answered the call in the hallway.

"Hello?"

The loan officer sounded professional.

"Mr. Hale, we're calling regarding your commercial loan application."

Ethan smiled.

"Perfect. I was expecting your approval."

There was a brief pause.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"We're unable to approve the loan."

His smile faded.

"What?"

"The collateral listed on your application is no longer available."

Ethan frowned.

"What collateral?"

"The future trust distribution and the property listed by your financial adviser."

His stomach dropped.

"That's impossible."

"The ownership documents were updated last week."

"We've received the revised filings."

"We're unable to proceed."

The call ended.

Ethan stood frozen.

For months...

He had been negotiating to purchase a luxury restaurant in downtown Chicago.

He had already signed a purchase agreement.

Paid deposits.

Hired staff.

Everything depended on that loan.

Everything depended on money he believed would eventually be his.

Slowly...

He walked back into the conference room.

His face had turned pale.

Margaret noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Ethan looked at her.

"My loan..."

"It was denied."

Richard quietly nodded.

"I'm afraid that's consistent with the new trust structure."

Ethan's hands began to shake.

"You knew."

Margaret answered honestly.

"I knew your financial adviser had contacted my office weeks ago."

"You planned your future around money that wasn't yours."

He stared at her in disbelief.

"You could have warned me."

Margaret looked at him with quiet sadness.

"I spent years warning you."

"You just stopped listening."

Chloe reached for Ethan's hand.

For once...

Neither of them had anything clever to say.

Then Ethan whispered the words he never imagined saying.

"Mom..."

"I need sixty-five thousand dollars."

"Please."

Margaret looked at the son she had loved his entire life.

The little boy who once brought her dandelions because he couldn't afford roses.

She barely recognized the man sitting before her.

She slowly closed the blue trust folder.

Then she looked him in the eyes.

"I guess I forgot to tell you..."

"I changed the trust."

Those words landed harder than any argument ever could.

Because Ethan finally understood...

May you like

He hadn't lost an inheritance.

He had lost his mother's trust.
