Chapter 2

The conference room fell silent.

Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting off the polished table.

Ethan looked from the blue folder to his mother.

He chuckled uneasily.

"So... what is all this?"

Margaret folded her hands.

"Open it."

Still smiling, Ethan flipped through the first few pages.

His smile disappeared.

He turned another page.

Then another.

His breathing slowed.

"What is this?"

Richard adjusted his glasses.

"Mrs. Hale amended her living trust last week."

Ethan frowned.

"You mean... updated it?"

"No," Richard replied calmly.

"She completely restructured it."

Chloe leaned closer, trying to read over Ethan's shoulder.

The first page listed every major asset.

The family home.

Investment accounts.

Rental properties.

A large stock portfolio.

Everything Ethan had always assumed would one day become his.

At the bottom of the page...

Every beneficiary had changed.

Ethan looked up.

"Mom..."

"This has to be a mistake."

Margaret met his eyes.

"It isn't."

He laughed nervously.

"Okay..."

"I don't get it."

"You've always said everything would stay in the family."

"It will."

She answered quietly.

"But I finally realized something."

"Family isn't defined by DNA."

Those words made Chloe shift uncomfortably in her chair.

Richard continued explaining.

"Mrs. Hale has established educational scholarships through the Hale Family Foundation."

"A portion of her estate will support veterans' housing."

"Another portion will fund children's cancer research."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"And me?"

Richard closed the folder.

"You are no longer the primary beneficiary."

The room became unbearably quiet.

Ethan looked at his mother.

"You actually removed me?"

Margaret nodded.

"I changed my priorities."

Chloe finally spoke.

"Margaret... surely this is just because of one misunderstanding."

Margaret smiled sadly.

"One misunderstanding?"

She looked directly at her daughter-in-law.

"You watched while my son told me I wasn't important enough to attend his celebration."

"You never said a word."

Chloe lowered her eyes.

She had no defense.

Ethan leaned forward.

"Mom... you're overreacting."

"I didn't mean it like that."

Margaret asked softly,

"Then how did you mean it?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation that could erase what she had heard.

Richard quietly gathered the papers.

"If there are no further questions—"

"There are."

Ethan interrupted.

He looked desperately at his mother.

"You can't seriously do this."

Margaret's expression never changed.

"I already did."

For the first time in his life...

Ethan realized that his mother wasn't asking for respect anymore.

She was expecting it.

And he had arrived years too late.

Just then...

His phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

The bank.

He declined the call.

A few seconds later...

It rang again.

May you like

He frowned.

Something suddenly didn't feel right.
