Chapter 6 - The Wall Behind the Bathroom Mirror
Catherine’s message ended with four words.
Check where vows begin.
Lucas read the phrase repeatedly.
Catherine had loved puzzles.
During their wedding, she hid a note for him inside the bridal suite bathroom mirror.
The hotel was the same one Vanessa selected for their ceremony.
Lucas had assumed the choice came from Vanessa’s desire for tradition.
Now he wondered whether Margaret chose the venue because she knew Catherine had hidden something there.
Detective Moore returned with a forensic team.
The bathroom where Emma had been locked remained sealed.
Behind the mirror, investigators discovered an old brass compartment built into the wall.
Inside was a memory card wrapped in plastic and a sealed letter addressed to Lucas.
Catherine’s handwriting covered three pages.

If you are reading this, I failed to reach you in time.
Margaret has been using your travel schedule to move money through Emma’s future trust. The transfers began before the trust was formally funded. Vanessa Whitmore works with the private clinic and has been helping create false medical expenses.
I confronted Margaret.
She said the Hale family cannot survive unless certain people are willing to make cruel decisions.
She knows I copied the records.
I no longer feel safe taking medication inside our home.
Please believe me, even if they tell you I became unstable.
Lucas lowered the letter.
The exact accusation they planned to use against Emma and Evelyn had been used against Catherine first.
Call a woman unstable.
Question her memory.
Create medical records.
Then take control.
The memory card contained account ledgers, audio recordings, and security footage from the Hale mansion.
One recording captured Margaret and Vanessa inside Catherine’s bedroom.
Catherine’s voice was weak but clear.
“You forged the authorization.”
Margaret answered:
“You are confused.”
“I know what I signed.”
Vanessa spoke next.
“The medication will help you rest.”
“I do not want it.”
“You are making this harder.”
The recording ended with a struggle and the sound of glass breaking.
It did not capture Catherine’s death.
It proved Vanessa had administered something after Catherine refused.
Medical records showed Catherine’s blood contained a sedative not listed among her prescriptions.
At the time, Margaret told investigators Catherine had taken an old anxiety medication voluntarily.
Lucas never questioned it.
He had been drowning in grief.
His mother handled every document.
Every funeral decision.
Every conversation with police.
Vanessa left the medical firm shortly afterward.
Three years later, Margaret introduced her to Lucas at a charity gala as if they had never met.
The relationship was designed from the beginning.
Vanessa did not accidentally fall in love with him.
She was placed inside his life by the woman who controlled it.
Lucas confronted Margaret inside an interview room.
“Why Vanessa?”
Margaret looked tired for the first time.
“She already knew the truth.”
“So you made her part of the family.”
“I kept her close.”
“You brought her near my daughter.”
“She understood what was necessary.”
“What happened to Catherine?”
“She refused to listen.”
“That is not an answer.”
Margaret stared through the glass.
“Your father left debts nobody knew about. Hale Aeronautics was weeks from collapse. Catherine’s trust structure prevented us from using the assets.”
“So you stole from Emma.”
“I borrowed.”
“You drugged Catherine.”
“I calmed her.”
“Did you kill her?”
Margaret’s eyes moved toward him.
“She had a weak heart.”
Lucas felt physically sick.
“You knew the medication could affect it.”
“She was warned not to fight.”
The room became silent.
Margaret had not confessed directly.
She had revealed enough.
Vanessa later claimed Margaret ordered every action.
Margaret claimed Vanessa administered the dose without permission.
Each woman tried to place Catherine’s final moment inside the other’s hands.
The evidence would determine what prosecutors could prove.
Lucas returned to Emma.
She sat in the hotel office drawing Catherine from an old photograph.
“Did you find Mommy’s secret?”
“Yes.”
“Was she telling the truth?”
“Yes.”
Emma nodded carefully.
“Then she was brave too.”
Lucas sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Did Grandma hurt her?”
He could not lie.
“She helped people do things that were dangerous.”
“Is she still my grandma?”
“Biologically, yes.”
“Do I have to love her?”
“No.”
“Do I have to forgive her?”
“No.”
Emma looked relieved.
Adults had spent years telling her family loyalty required silence.
Lucas would not continue that lesson.
Detective Moore entered carrying the forensic report from Vanessa’s wedding gown.
The torn hidden seam contained traces of the same sedative found in Catherine’s preserved blood sample.
Vanessa had carried a fresh vial inside her dress.
