Chapter 3 - The Car Waiting Behind the Hotel
The attorney introduced himself as Graham Price.
He was a narrow faced man in his late forties wearing a dark suit and carrying a leather file case.
Lucas met him inside a private hotel office.
Emma remained beside him.
Vanessa and Margaret sat across the room under the observation of hotel security.
Graham looked uncomfortable when he realized the wedding had been canceled.
“I was told Mr. Hale had approved the transition.”
“I approved nothing.”
The attorney examined the documents.
“These signatures were provided to our office three days ago.”
“By whom?”
Graham glanced toward Vanessa.
“Mrs. Margaret Hale’s assistant.”
Lucas looked at his mother.
Margaret remained silent.
“What transition?” Lucas asked.
“Emma was scheduled for transportation to Saint Arden tonight.”
“Tonight?”
“After the reception.”
Emma gripped Lucas’s hand.
He kept his voice calm for her.
“Where is the school?”
“Northern Vermont.”
“How long was she supposed to remain there?”
“The initial placement agreement states twelve months.”
Lucas stared at him.
“One year.”
“With possible extension after evaluation.”
“Who performs the evaluation?”
“Saint Arden staff.”
“Who owns the institution?”
Graham hesitated.
“I would have to review the corporate structure.”
Helen Shaw, Lucas’s personal attorney, arrived fifteen minutes later.
She immediately examined every page.
“The agreement transfers temporary educational custody to Saint Arden. It also grants the institution authority to restrict parental communication during an adjustment period.”
“How long?”
“Ninety days.”
Emma looked up.
“I couldn’t call Daddy?”
Lucas pulled her closer.
“No one is taking you anywhere.”
Helen continued.
“The financial schedule authorizes monthly payments from Catherine’s trust.”
“How much?”
“One hundred eighty thousand dollars.”
Lucas stared at her.
“Every month?”
“Yes.”
“For a six year old boarding school?”
“It appears Saint Arden would also become the trust’s medical and educational representative.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“Emma needs specialized supervision.”
Helen turned toward her.
“Saint Arden is controlled by Arden Child Development Holdings.”
“And?”
Helen opened her laptop.
“The holding company’s largest private investor is Whitmore Capital.”
Vanessa’s family company.
Lucas slowly looked toward his former bride.
“You planned to transfer Emma’s trust money into your own family business.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“That is absurd.”
“The school receives more than two million dollars each year.”
“For care.”
“What care?”
“Therapy. Education. Security.”
“She attends first grade.”
“She has behavioral problems.”
Emma began crying again.
Lucas rose so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“Do not describe my daughter that way.”
Vanessa looked toward the security guards as if she expected them to protect her.
Lucas forced himself to sit again.
Graham opened his file case.
“There is another issue.”
He removed a transportation schedule.
A private car had been booked beneath the hotel.
Two escorts were waiting in the underground service garage.
Emma’s luggage had already been packed.
Lucas looked at Margaret.
“You packed her room.”
“Only essential things.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
“While I was preparing to marry the woman helping you steal from my child.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“I was securing Emma’s future.”
“You were sending her away before I discovered what you had done.”
“You were becoming distracted.”
“By my marriage?”
“By Vanessa.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
Margaret continued.
“She was supposed to give this family stability. Instead, she began demanding control.”
Vanessa laughed in disbelief.
“You came to me.”
“You agreed because you wanted Lucas.”
“You promised the trust would finance the Whitmore debt.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Everyone went still.
Helen looked between the two women.
“What debt?”
Vanessa closed her mouth.
Margaret’s expression became murderous.
Lucas leaned forward.
“What debt?”
Graham answered reluctantly.
“Whitmore Capital has significant exposure connected to Saint Arden’s property loans.”
Vanessa’s family company was collapsing.
Saint Arden had borrowed against several facilities.
Catherine’s trust payments would stabilize those loans.
Emma’s removal was not only about controlling the child.
It was meant to rescue Vanessa’s family fortune.
Lucas looked at Margaret.
“What do you receive?”
His mother did not answer.
Helen examined the trust amendment attached to the custody papers.
“This document appoints Margaret sole administrator if Emma is placed in residential treatment.”
Lucas understood.
His mother gained complete control over Catherine’s trust.
Vanessa’s family received the monthly payments.
Both women benefited from making a healthy child appear disturbed.
A security officer entered.
“Mr. Hale, we located the transport vehicle.”
“Is anyone inside?”
“Two men. They claim they are licensed child escorts.”
“Did they know Emma had not agreed to leave?”
“They said resistance was expected.”
Lucas’s face became cold.
“Call the police.”
Margaret stood.
“You will destroy our name.”
Lucas looked at her.
“You tried to make my daughter disappear.”
“I tried to save everything your father built.”
“Using a six year old.”
“Using money that should remain in the family.”
“It belongs to Emma.”
“She is a child.”
“Exactly.”
The door opened again.
A hotel employee carried a small suitcase recovered from the transport vehicle.
Emma recognized it.
“That’s mine.”
Lucas unzipped it.
Inside were clothes, medicine, and her cloth rabbit.
Beneath the rabbit was an unsigned letter addressed to Lucas.
The words claimed Emma had chosen to leave because she wanted treatment and did not wish to interfere with his new marriage.
A six year old child could not have written it.
At the bottom was a space for Emma’s signature.
