Chapter 14 - Before Peter Died
The phrase changed the timeline.
Someone is using Peter’s name.
Peter had been alive.
Sick with cancer.
On medical leave.
His credentials may have been used while he could not monitor them.
Sarah recorded the memo four years earlier.
Peter died eighteen months ago.
Therefore identity misuse began long before his death.
The later shell company simply continued it.
Thomas listened to Sarah’s memo.
He looked stunned.
“I forgot that call.”
“What did you tell her?”
“I found certifications under Peter’s ID while he was in chemotherapy.”
“Did Peter know?”
“Yes.”
“Did he report?”
“He tried.”
Records confirmed.
Peter emailed Meridian IT:
My account is active while I am on leave. Disable immediately.
IT replied:
Ticket opened.
Two weeks later:
Account still active.
Peter:
This is unacceptable.
Then account disabled.
Or appeared disabled.
Legacy quality system still accepted his old certificate token.
Multiple systems.
Poor access control.
Someone exploited it.
Who first?
Certification logs from that period identified two questionable entries.
One linked to HX4417C.
Another to different part.
Workstation:
Inventory office 3.
Who used it?
Badge logs:
Marcus Bell.
Samantha Price.
Darren Lowe visitor badge.
Three possibilities.
Marcus had been Sarah’s source.
Samantha later admitted fraud.
Darren profited.
Could be Samantha.
She denied using Peter’s token before death.
Could be Darren.
He denied.
Could be someone else using shared terminal.
Then Peter’s widow, Anne Vale, produced a notebook.
Peter wrote during chemotherapy.
March 4:
Sam says Darren wants me to sign from home. Refused.

System shows two releases under me. Not mine.
March 9:
Thomas believes Samantha processed them.
There.
Not proof Samantha personally applied credential.
But Peter suspected.

Samantha says she is only following Darren’s release spreadsheet.

Told Marcus. He says copy everything.

Sarah wants meeting.
Then:
March 22:
Darren says if I keep accusing staff, he will report I am cognitively impaired from medication.
Daniel stared.
Same tactic in another world.
Question the injured or sick person.
Peter had cancer treatment.
Darren allegedly threatened to make concerns sound like medication confusion.
Anne said:
“Peter stopped pushing because he was tired.”
Not cowardly.
Ill.
Then Peter recovered temporarily.
Returned to work.
The issue seemed to stop.
Years later it restarted after he died.
Maybe the same process.
Maybe new people learned old vulnerability.
Samantha’s fuller cooperation eventually answered part.
She admitted processing release spreadsheets while Peter was sick.
“Did you apply his certificate?”
“I used a shared quality macro.”
“What does that mean?”
“It pulled the assigned technician from the work order.”
“Peter?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he was on leave?”
“Yes.”
“Why not change technician?”
“Darren said engineering already reviewed.”
“So you allowed the system to certify under an absent technician.”
“Yes.”
Not sophisticated identity theft at first.
Shortcut.
Later she used his records to create a shell because the boundary had already been crossed.
That was the progression.
Darren’s role became harder to deny.
Emails showed he instructed Samantha to process releases under existing work orders.
He argued he did not understand digital certification mechanics.
Maybe.
He knew Peter was absent.
Then the shell company after Peter’s death.
Bank records showed initial funding:
Red Ridge operating account.
Authorized by Darren Lowe.
There.
Darren created the shell financially even if Samantha filed paperwork.
He eventually admitted:
“I wanted a consulting vehicle that could pay people without Red Ridge vendor conflict reporting.”
Kickback channel.
Why use Peter?
“Because Samantha had the file.”
He said it as if that answered.
It did not.
Then Thomas Vane’s involvement.
He took money.
Helped approval.
Did he know Peter’s identity was stolen?
Eventually yes.
At first he claimed estate consulting.
Later he saw Peter’s widow publicly dispute the company.
He stayed silent.
Paul Danner took money.
Samantha manipulated documents.
Darren directed.
Regulators and prosecutors would sort exact offenses.
Flight 101’s servo had reached the aircraft through this network.
Then Sarah’s memo continued.
“I told Thomas I am done chasing serial numbers after this month.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
She really had been leaving it behind.
Then:
“I put a copy with Orion because I do not trust myself to keep work and family separate. Which is ironic.”
Emily wiped her eyes.
Then the final sentence.
“Rachel knows enough to find the archive if she ever has to.”
Rachel Stone.
That explained why she recognized the sleeve at the picnic.
Sarah had intentionally left a breadcrumb.
Not for a dramatic future disaster.
For record preservation.
Rachel had honored it badly but usefully.
Then the airline safety board issued preliminary findings.
Flight 101’s diversion was appropriate due medical emergency and emerging maintenance concern.
Crew actions appropriate.
Megan commended.
Rachel Monroe commended.
Daniel declined media interview.
Emily refused every talk show invitation.
Karen’s video remained viral anyway.
Daniel hated that.
Then one more digital anomaly surfaced.
Sarah’s card had been accessed at the picnic.
Rachel admitted.
But there was a second access timestamp.
Three days before Flight 101.
Someone mounted the card again.
Rachel denied.
Emily had Orion at home.
Daniel was flying a three day trip.
Emily stayed with Daniel’s sister, Laura Carter.
Who touched Orion?
Laura said nobody.
Then Emily remembered taking it to school.
Her class had a “family object” presentation.
Orion spent one hour in the classroom supply cabinet during lunch.
No reason an aerospace conspirator would be there.
Probably meaningless.
Until the card log showed a file copied onto it during that access.
PASSENGER MANIFEST FINAL.
Flight 101.
Created three days before departure.
Rachel could not have added it eleven days earlier.
Someone else updated the card after the picnic.
