Chapter 4

No one spoke.

The only sound inside the dining room was the slow click of the forensic examiner sealing each piece of evidence into separate bags.

Investigator Reed carefully placed the loan documents on the granite kitchen island.

"Mrs. Salgado," he asked calmly, "have you ever applied for a personal loan with Falcon Financial Group?"

Valeria looked at the company logo.

"I've never even heard of them."

Reed slid another page toward her.

"Have you ever borrowed two hundred and eighty thousand dollars?"

Her eyes widened.

"No."

"Have you ever authorized anyone else to borrow money in your name?"

"No."

Reed nodded once.

"I expected that answer."

He turned to the forensic examiner.

"Photograph every page before we move anything."

The examiner immediately began documenting the documents, the broken bracelet, the damaged phone, and the torn fabric.

Each photograph echoed through the silent room with a sharp camera click.

Julián shifted nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

No one answered him.

He looked at Ernesto.

"You seriously invited investigators to your daughter's birthday?"

Ernesto's expression remained unchanged.

"I invited no one."

Julián frowned.

"What?"

"I made one phone call after you admitted striking my daughter."

His eyes never left Julián's.

"The investigators made their own decisions."

Julián laughed bitterly.

"So this is revenge."

"No."

Ernesto answered almost gently.

"This is accountability."

Across the room, Ofelia suddenly spoke.

"The documents are fake."

Everyone turned toward her.

"They don't prove anything."

Investigator Reed looked at her carefully.

"I haven't said they prove anything."

Ofelia realized her mistake immediately.

Reed continued.

"You knew they existed before I removed them from the bag."

She froze.

"I..."

"You called them fake before anyone explained what they were."

The room fell silent again.

One of the guests quietly whispered,

"Oh, my God..."

Reed calmly wrote another note.

Years of investigative work had taught him something invaluable.

People often revealed more by trying to explain themselves than by remaining silent.

Valeria watched everything unfold in disbelief.

For years she had believed no one would ever believe her.

Now she wasn't saying anything at all.

The evidence was speaking for her.

The Women's Justice Advocate quietly guided Valeria into the living room, away from the growing tension.

"My name is Karen," she repeated softly.

"I know today is overwhelming."

Valeria nodded.

"I don't even know what's happening anymore."

Karen handed her a bottle of water.

"What happened today wasn't your fault."

Valeria looked down at her hands.

"I kept telling myself if I just stayed quiet..."

She stopped.

Karen waited patiently.

"...things would get better."

"They rarely do."

Valeria closed her eyes.

"I thought protecting my marriage meant protecting my family."

Karen answered gently.

"You were protecting your survival."

For the first time in years...

Valeria allowed herself to believe there might be a difference.

Meanwhile, back in the dining room, the forensic examiner carefully powered on the damaged phone recovered from the trash bag.

The screen flickered once.

Then lit up.

"It's still working."

Reed stepped closer.

"Can you access it?"

"I think so."

A passcode prompt appeared.

Julián immediately spoke.

"That's my phone."

The examiner looked up.

"You just identified it as yours?"

Julián hesitated.

"I..."

Reed quietly smiled.

"Thank you."

The examiner entered the passcode that Julián had spoken aloud without realizing it.

The phone unlocked.

Dozens of messages appeared.

Several had been deleted recently.

Fortunately, the forensic software recovered them within seconds.

The examiner's expression changed.

"Investigator..."

Reed walked over.

"What did you find?"

The examiner turned the screen toward him.

A text conversation.

The sender's name:

Mom

Ofelia's face turned pale.

Reed silently read the messages.

Destroy the papers before Ernesto gets here.

Another message.

Throw away her broken bracelet too. If she keeps it, she'll remember what happened.

Then another.

Make sure Valeria signs the refinancing documents tonight. Tell her they're insurance forms.

The room became absolutely still.

Reed looked up slowly.

"Mrs. Carter..."

His voice remained calm.

"Would you like to explain these messages?"

Ofelia couldn't speak.

Her lips trembled.

Julián stepped forward.

"My mother had nothing to do with this."

Reed raised an eyebrow.

"The messages were sent from her phone."

"They're being misunderstood."

"Then help me understand."

Julián searched desperately for an explanation.

None came.

Ernesto had not moved once.

He simply stood beside the dining table with his hands loosely folded, watching years of deception unravel without saying a word.

One of the guests quietly walked over to Valeria.

It was Mrs. Henderson, an elderly neighbor who had attended nearly every Carter family gathering.

She gently took Valeria's hand.

"I owe you an apology."

Valeria looked surprised.

"I heard arguments."

Mrs. Henderson's eyes filled with regret.

"I heard you crying more than once."

Valeria remained silent.

"I convinced myself it wasn't my business."

A tear rolled down the older woman's cheek.

"I should have knocked on your door."

Valeria squeezed her hand.

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

Their conversation was interrupted by another sharp camera click.

The forensic examiner had reached the final folder inside the evidence bag.

It contained several property records.

One document immediately caught Reed's attention.

He read it once.

Then again.

Finally he looked toward Valeria.

"Do you own a cabin in Flagstaff?"

She frowned.

"No."

"This paperwork says you sold one six months ago."

Valeria stared at him.

"I've never owned a cabin."

Reed slowly lowered the document.

"Then someone has been using your identity for far longer than we thought."

The room fell silent once again.

This was no longer only a domestic violence investigation.

It was becoming a case involving identity fraud, forged financial documents, and a carefully organized pattern of deception.

Just then, Reed's phone vibrated.

He answered briefly.

His expression remained neutral until the caller mentioned one name.

Falcon Financial Group.

He listened for nearly a minute before ending the call.

Ernesto watched him closely.

"What is it?"

Reed looked around the room before answering.

"We've just confirmed that Falcon Financial filed a fraud complaint of its own this morning."

Julián's face lost all color.

"They're looking for the person who submitted these forged loan applications..."

Reed slowly turned toward him.

May you like

"...and they already have surveillance footage."

For the first time that afternoon, Julián looked like a man who understood he could no longer talk his way out of what was coming.
