Chapter 1

Late afternoon sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Carter residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, bathing the elegant dining room in warm golden light. Cream-colored balloons floated above a long oak table decorated with fresh roses, crystal glasses, and a three-tier birthday cake waiting to be cut.
Everything looked perfect.
At least, that's what Ofelia Carter wanted everyone to believe.
She walked among the guests with effortless confidence, complimenting the decorations and making certain every photograph captured the image of a wealthy, successful family.
"Doesn't she look beautiful?" Ofelia asked proudly as she gestured toward Valeria.
The guests smiled politely.
Valeria Salgado stood beside the birthday cake in an emerald-green dress with elegant long sleeves. Her chestnut hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, carefully hiding the faint discoloration near her jaw.
Professional makeup concealed most of the bruising.
Most.
Only someone who knew her well would notice the difference.
Her smile never reached her eyes.
Across the room, her husband, Julián Carter, laughed comfortably with several business associates while casually swirling a glass of tequila.
He looked relaxed.
Confident.
Completely in control.
Whenever Valeria glanced in his direction, she instinctively lowered her eyes.
No one seemed to notice.
Or perhaps...
No one wanted to.
Only one guest had not yet arrived.
Ernesto Salgado.
Valeria's father.
A former prosecutor known throughout Arizona for dismantling organized financial crime cases without raising his voice.
He had built his reputation on one simple principle.
People lied.
Evidence didn't.
Valeria checked her phone.
4:57 p.m.
Her father was almost never late.
She quietly exhaled.
Part of her hoped he wouldn't come.
The other part silently prayed he would.
Because if anyone looked closely enough...
They would see the truth hidden beneath her makeup.
Three years earlier, when Valeria married Julián, everyone had called them the perfect couple.
He was charming.
Successful.
Attentive.
He opened doors for her.
Sent flowers to her office.
Remembered birthdays.
Complimented her in front of everyone.
Even Ernesto had admitted he seemed like a respectable young man.
Looking back...
Valeria often wondered whether any of it had been real.
The first slap came six months after the wedding.
It happened quietly.
No shouting.
No broken furniture.
Only one sentence.
"You embarrassed me."
Then...
A single strike across her face.
Julián apologized for hours afterward.
He cried.
Promised it would never happen again.
Bought expensive jewelry.
Reserved a weekend at a luxury resort.
She believed him.
The second time...
He blamed stress.
The third...
Alcohol.
By the tenth...
There were no more apologies.
Only excuses.
Then eventually...
Silence.
Valeria stopped telling people she'd fallen.
Stopped inventing stories about bumping into cabinets.
Stopped believing tomorrow would be different.
She simply learned how to hide bruises beneath long sleeves and carefully applied makeup.
Only one person ever questioned her.
Her father.
Twice he had asked whether everything was alright.
Twice she had smiled and answered yes.
Twice he had accepted the answer.
Or at least...
Pretended to.
The front door opened.
Conversation immediately quieted.
Ernesto Salgado entered wearing a charcoal tailored suit and a dark blue tie.
Despite turning sixty earlier that year, he still carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to walking into courtrooms where everyone else was nervous.
He greeted several guests politely.
Shook hands.
Smiled.
Then his eyes found Valeria.
She smiled automatically.
He smiled back.
For exactly one second.
Then his expression changed.
Almost imperceptibly.
His eyes moved to the left side of her face.
A faint shadow beneath carefully blended foundation.
Not enough for anyone else.
Enough for him.
He walked toward her without hurry.
The room slowly became quieter.
Valeria felt her heartbeat quicken.
Her father stopped only inches away.
He didn't touch her.
Didn't immediately ask another question.
He simply looked into her eyes.
She knew that look.
As a child, it had meant he already knew the truth before asking.
His voice remained calm.
Soft enough that nearby guests leaned closer to hear.
"My daughter..."
Valeria couldn't answer.
"...who did this to your face?"
The room became completely silent.
Every conversation stopped.
Every glass froze halfway to someone's lips.
Across the table, Julián slowly turned toward them.
His relaxed smile never disappeared.
Valeria lowered her eyes.
She had rehearsed this moment hundreds of times.
A fall.
A cabinet door.
An accident while gardening.
The lies waited on the tip of her tongue.
But for some reason...
She couldn't say them.
Ernesto noticed.
He had spent three decades questioning witnesses.
Sometimes...
Silence answered more than words ever could.
He gently placed one hand over his daughter's trembling fingers.
"You don't have to protect anyone."
Valeria felt tears threatening to rise.
She fought them back.
Across the room, Julián set down his drink and began walking toward them.
Still smiling.
Still convinced nothing could happen inside a room full of guests.
Valeria looked at her father one last time.
May you like
For the first time in years...
She wanted to tell him everything.
