Chapter 5

Emma opened the door.

A young woman stood in the hallway.

Perhaps twenty-two years old.

Nervous.

Holding a small bouquet of white lilies.

Her eyes were already filled with tears.

"You..."

Emma whispered.

"You're Lily?"

The woman nodded.

"Yes."

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Lily looked past Emma toward the apartment.

Toward the blue room.

And softly asked,

"Did you finally find it?"

Emma began crying again.

"Find what?"

Lily smiled sadly.

"The reason Noah never wanted to be remembered for dying."

They sat together at the kitchen table.

The same table where Emma and Noah had shared countless breakfasts.

Lily carefully placed a worn envelope between them.

"Noah told me to give you this if you ever opened Gift #87."

Emma stared at it.

Another letter.

Another piece of Noah.

Another piece she wasn't ready to lose.

Yet couldn't stop searching for.

Lily took a deep breath.

"I met Noah seven years ago."

Emma frowned.

"Seven?"

That was before the cancer.

Before the surgeries.

Before everything.

Lily nodded.

"I was fifteen."

"I needed a heart transplant."

Emma froze.

A heart transplant.

Suddenly...

The doctor.

The hospital visits.

The long unexplained absences.

Everything connected.

"My family couldn't afford treatment."

Lily continued.

"We were already preparing for the worst."

"Then one day..."

"A man I had never met paid every remaining medical bill."

Emma's eyes widened.

"Noah."

Lily smiled.

"Yes."

"He wouldn't let the hospital tell us who he was."

"He said it wasn't important."

Emma laughed through tears.

That sounded exactly like him.

Lily opened her purse.

Inside was a stack of photographs.

Noah visiting children's wards.

Noah reading books to sick patients.

Noah organizing charity events.

Noah sitting beside hospital beds.

Always smiling.

Never posing.

Never asking for recognition.

Emma stared in disbelief.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Lily's answer came immediately.

"Because he wasn't doing it for credit."

For the next hour...

Lily told story after story.

People Noah had helped.

Families Noah had supported.

Strangers Noah had quietly saved.

Most had never even learned his name.

Emma realized something heartbreaking.

The man she loved most...

Was even kinder than she had known.

Finally...

Lily pushed the envelope toward her.

"This is the last thing."

Emma's hands trembled.

"The last thing?"

Lily nodded.

"He called it his final birthday gift."

Emma carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

No videos.

No instructions.

No hidden keys.

Just Noah's handwriting.

She immediately recognized the first line.

"Dear Emma,

If you've reached this letter, then you've already cried enough."

Emma laughed despite herself.

"Noah..."

She continued reading.

"I know you're looking for one final secret.

One final surprise.

One final explanation.

But there isn't one."

Emma blinked.

"The truth is much simpler than that.

I loved you.

You loved me.

We were lucky enough to find each other twice.

Most people never find that once."

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"I don't want the blue room to become a museum.

I don't want the gifts to become chains.

And I definitely don't want you spending the next thirty years talking to my photograph."

Emma smiled.

Because that was exactly what she had been doing.

Then she reached the final paragraph.

And completely broke down.

"The greatest gift I ever gave you isn't in that room.

It isn't a video.

It isn't a present.

It isn't even my liver."

Her vision blurred.

"The greatest gift I ever gave you was time.

More birthdays.

More sunrises.

More chances to laugh.

More chances to love.

More life."

So promise me something.

Use it.

Live so fully that someday, when you see me again, you'll need hours to tell me everything I missed.

At the bottom of the page was the final sentence Noah would ever write to her.

"Happy Birthday, Emma.

For every year.

Love Always,

Noah"

Months later...

The blue room no longer remained locked.

Emma opened it to the world.

Not as a memorial.

But as a charity project.

Every birthday gift Noah had prepared inspired a new program.

Books for children.

Birthday parties for foster kids.

Hospital donations.

Scholarships.

Acts of kindness.

Thousands of them.

Years later...

On her fortieth birthday...

Emma opened one of Noah's gifts.

Inside was a simple mirror.

Attached was a note.

Look at her.

She's exactly who I hoped you'd become.

Emma smiled through tears.

For the first time...

The tears weren't from grief.

They were from gratitude.

Because Noah had been right.

Love doesn't end when a heartbeat does.

Sometimes...

It simply changes form.

And somewhere, in every birthday candle she blew out...

In every child who smiled because of Noah's charity...

In every sunrise she was still alive to see...

His love remained.

Not trapped in a hidden room.

May you like

But alive in the life he fought so hard to give her.

The End. ❤️
