Chapter 1

The silver key trembled between Emma's fingers.

For three months...

She had carried it everywhere.

Three months since Noah's funeral.

Three months since his lawyer had handed her a small envelope with only one sentence inside.

"Don't open the blue door until you're ready."

She had never been ready.

Until today.

The apartment was painfully quiet.

Everything looked exactly as Noah had left it.

His favorite coffee mug still sat beside the sink.

His jacket still hung beside the front door.

A half-finished crossword puzzle remained on the kitchen table.

Emma had never found the strength to move any of it.

Because moving his things...

Felt too much like accepting he was gone.

At the end of the hallway stood a blue wooden door.

The only room Noah had always kept locked.

Whenever Emma jokingly asked what was inside...

He would smile.

"Karaoke videos."

"My terrible paintings."

"Embarrassing birthday surprises."

She always laughed.

Now...

Those memories hurt.

Emma slid the key into the lock.

Click.

The door slowly opened.

At first...

She couldn't understand what she was seeing.

The room wasn't empty.

It wasn't an office.

Or a workshop.

It was...

Filled.

From floor to ceiling.

With birthday presents.

Hundreds of them.

Beautifully wrapped.

Different colors.

Different ribbons.

Some tiny.

Some enormous.

Every shelf.

Every corner.

Every inch of the room held another carefully prepared gift.

Emma covered her mouth.

"Oh... Noah..."

She slowly stepped inside.

Each present carried a handwritten tag.

For Your 30th Birthday

Another.

For the Day You Get Your First Gray Hair

Another.

Open After Your First Promotion

Another.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

Another.

For Your 40th Birthday

Another.

For Christmas When You Miss Me Too Much

Her knees gave way.

She collapsed onto the floor.

Sobbing.

In the center of the room sat a small wooden desk.

On it rested a laptop.

Beside it...

A tiny gift box wrapped in silver paper.

Attached was a note.

Open this one first.

Emma carefully untied the ribbon.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

Hands trembling...

She inserted it into the laptop.

The screen flickered.

Then...

Noah appeared.

Healthy.

Smiling.

Wearing the blue sweater she had always stolen from him.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

"Hi, Em."

Her heart shattered.

She instinctively reached toward the screen.

"No..."

His recorded voice continued gently.

"If you're watching this..."

"I've already lost my argument with death."

Emma burst into tears.

"No..."

"No..."

Noah chuckled softly.

"I know."

"You're probably angry."

"You should be."

"I kept something from you."

Emma whispered through tears,

"You promised..."

"We didn't keep secrets."

As though he could hear her across time...

Noah nodded.

"I know."

"And I'm sorry."

"I wanted to tell you every single day."

"But every time I tried..."

"I looked at your smile."

"And I couldn't bear becoming the reason it disappeared."

Emma's breathing became uneven.

She remembered everything.

The late-night hospital appointments.

The unexplained exhaustion.

The canceled vacations.

The locked room.

She had thought...

There was another woman.

She had even confronted him once.

"Who are you hiding?"

Noah had only smiled sadly.

"Not who."

"What."

The video continued.

"I'm not hiding a lover."

Emma closed her eyes.

Tears streamed freely down her face.

Then Noah spoke the words that would haunt her forever.

"I'm hiding a terminal illness."

Emma froze.

"I won't be here to see your thirtieth birthday."

"Or your fortieth."

"I won't see your first gray hair."

"I won't grow old beside you."

"So..."

"I decided to prepare for all the birthdays I'll miss."

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

"That way..."

"Even after I'm gone..."

"I still get to celebrate your life."

Emma completely broke down.

Every wrapped gift surrounding her suddenly felt impossibly heavy.

Each one represented a birthday...

He already knew he would never see.

Each ribbon had been tied...

While he was quietly dying.

Noah smiled one last time at the camera.

"I need you to promise me something."

The video paused for a brief second.

Then his expression became serious.

"Before you open another gift..."

"You need to know why I really kept this room locked."

Emma wiped away her tears.

Her heartbeat quickened.

May you like

Because she suddenly realized...

The birthday presents weren't the biggest secret Noah had been hiding.
