Chapter 4 - The Videos Jason Wanted the Court to See

The dog cage camera recorded forty three hours.

Detective Ellis warned me before playing anything.

“You do not have to watch all of it.”

“I need to know.”

“You need enough to protect her. You do not need to punish yourself.”

We viewed the recordings with Emily’s advocate and a trauma specialist. Emily did not watch.

The first video began inside the kitchen.

Jason carried the cage through the back door while Sarah followed.

She asked:

“Where did you get that?”

“Haven Ridge.”

“You are not putting Emily inside it.”

“She destroyed the office.”

“She knocked over a lamp.”

“She needs controlled space.”

“This is a dog cage.”

“It is temporary.”

Sarah argued for six minutes.

Then Jason raised one hand.

She stopped speaking.

The video jumped forward.

Emily stood near the patio in her blue hoodie.

Jason told her that Michael had signed permission for a behavioral assessment.

Emily said:

“My dad would never sign that.”

Jason showed her the forged document.

Sarah stood behind him.

Emily looked at her mother.

“Is it real?”

Sarah said nothing.

That silence gave Jason the answer he needed.

He ordered Emily into the cage.

She refused.

He dragged her by the wrist.

Sarah moved once, then stopped when Jason looked toward the house.

Rachel and the basement boy were already inside.

The next recording showed Jason placing the camera between the bars.

He turned it on only after Emily began screaming.

He asked:

“Why are you attacking your mother?”

“I am not.”

“Why did your father tell you to break things?”

“He did not.”

“Say that Michael made you afraid of this house.”

“No.”

Jason left her without water for three hours.

When he returned, he asked again.

Emily still refused.

By Saturday night, her answers changed.

“My dad says Jason is dangerous.”

“Does your father want you to hate your mother?”

Emily stared at the lens.

“Yes.”

I stopped the video.

The trauma specialist placed one hand on the table.

“She was conserving energy and adapting.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

I looked at my daughter’s face frozen on the screen.

Her eyes did not match the word yes.

Jason planned to submit the edited footage during the emergency custody hearing.

The full recording showed coercion.

The court version began only after Emily answered as he wanted.

He had titled it:

MICHAEL COACHING CONFIRMED.

Another video showed Sarah sitting alone beside the cage after midnight.

“I am sorry.”

Emily remained curled beneath the blanket.

Sarah whispered:

“I thought he was helping us.”

“You picked him.”

“I know.”

“You kept taking me back.”

“I know.”

“Dad believed me.”

Sarah covered her face.

“I was afraid he would take you forever.”

“He is taking me now.”

The sentence broke through every excuse Sarah might later offer.

She feared losing custody to me.

That fear helped Jason gain physical control.

The final cage video began Sunday morning.

Jason spoke with Melissa Crane through a video call.

Her face remained hidden, but the voice was clear.

“The father requested a welfare check Friday.”

Jason answered:

“The school delayed it.”

“Rachel ruined that.”

“She is handled.”

“And Sarah?”

“She tried to send a message.”

“Move her.”

“Where?”

“The lake property.”

Crane continued.

“Keep Emily visible until Michael enters the yard. We need him breaking the lock and removing her before police arrive.”

The rescue had been expected.

Jason wanted video of me kicking open the cage and carrying Emily away.

Without the footage before that moment, the scene could become an abduction by an angry father.

The emergency petition had already declared Sarah the legal custodian.

Police might have arrived to find me trespassing, armed with a metal tool, carrying a frightened child while Jason claimed I attacked him.

Mrs. Harris changed the plan.

Her presence created a witness Jason did not control.

Rachel moved inside the pool bag.

The surviving victim turned the backyard into a crime scene before Jason could define it.

The full cage recording survived because Emily had loosened the memory card cover with a piece of wire from the blanket.

Jason removed the wrong card.

My daughter had protected the evidence while dehydrated and terrified.

Detective Ellis found another file on the device.

It contained earlier cage videos.

Different children.

Different houses.

The same questions.

Why did your mother make you afraid?

Why did your father tell you to lie?

Why do you need Haven Ridge?

Jason traveled with the cage.

It was not built for Emily.

DNA recovered from the bars belonged to at least six children.

Lily Clark was one.

The basement boy may have been another.

A seven year old girl named Sophie Hale appeared in one video from eighteen months earlier.

Her father was currently serving a prison sentence for assaulting Jason during a custody exchange.

The court had seen an edited recording showing the father rushing at Jason.

The full video showed Jason locking Sophie inside the cage first.

Her father’s violence was not legally justified.

It had been deliberately provoked and selectively recorded.

Jason and Crane used parents’ protective reactions as evidence of instability.

Haven Ridge then gained custody recommendations, transport contracts, and residential payments.

Children became more profitable after their safe parent lost control.

I thought of the metal tool in my hands.

One more strike could have made me another edited father.

Mrs. Harris had recorded the attack from her upstairs window.

Her full video showed Jason charging with the knife.

That evidence protected me.

Not every parent in Jason’s files had a neighbor watching.

We identified four cases where mothers or fathers lost custody after reacting to staged danger.

Two children remained inside Haven Ridge programs.

One had disappeared.

One was Lily.

Detective Ellis showed me a list.

The missing basement boy could be Caleb Morgan, twelve, taken from Ohio after his mother was declared delusional.

His mother had claimed a counselor changed his name to Noah.

Police had dismissed the claim because she repeatedly interrupted hearings and threatened a judge.

Now Emily had heard the same two names through a heating vent.

Caleb’s mother had been telling the truth.

Before we could contact her, the hospital received a legal order.

It required Emily’s transfer into temporary protective custody.

The order named Haven Ridge as the approved emergency placement.

Judge’s signature: Rebecca Lane.

The same judge had overseen Lily Clark’s case.

Continue to the next part: A court order attempts to remove Emily from the hospital and send her directly into the program connected to Jason.
