Chapter 3 - The Room beneath the Stairs

Police searched the basement twice.

The first team found a laundry area, an old furnace, storage shelves, and a locked utility room containing cleaning chemicals.

The second search used a dog trained to detect human scent.

It stopped beneath the stairs.

Behind a stack of paint cans, investigators found a narrow door built into the wall.

The room beyond it measured six feet by eight.

A mattress lay on the floor.

A plastic bucket stood in one corner.

Children’s fingerprints covered the walls.

Someone had removed the child before police entered.

Blood on the mattress belonged to a male.

The laboratory could not identify him immediately.

Emily described a boy around twelve with light brown hair and a scar near his eyebrow.

Jason called him Noah.

“Was Noah there when you entered the cage?” Detective Ellis asked.

“He was in the basement.”

“Did you speak to him?”

“Through the heating vent.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That Jason changes our names when people start looking.”

“Did he know his real name?”

“He said it might be Caleb.”

“Anything else?”

“He said his mother was in court every month.”

“Did he say where he came from?”

“Ohio.”

The missing child database contained several boys named Caleb from Ohio. None could be identified from description alone.

Emily had seen only part of his face through the vent.

Noah or Caleb told her not to believe anything Jason said about parents.

“He said Jason makes kids repeat stories until the stories feel like memories.”

The sentence described more than abuse.

It described a method.

Rachel Moss regained consciousness the following morning.

Detective Ellis interviewed her with medical staff present.

I was not allowed inside, but Rachel requested to speak with me afterward.

Her face remained pale. Bruises darkened one side of her neck.

“I am sorry.”

“You went to find my daughter.”

“I should have reported earlier.”

“You were the person who came.”

She closed her eyes.

For three months, Emily visited the school nurse with stomach pain, headaches, and unexplained fatigue.

Each time, Sarah provided a medical note saying Emily suffered anxiety related to parental conflict.

The notes came from Dr. Adrian Vale.

Jason’s legal name was Jason Adrian Vale Reed.

He used Reed socially after marrying Sarah.

His professional records appeared under Adrian Vale.

He had worked as a family trauma counselor before losing his license in another state.

The disciplinary file was sealed after an appeal.

Rachel found the connection on Thursday.

She scheduled the welfare visit for Friday.

“When I arrived, Sarah opened the door,” Rachel said.

“What did she look like?”

“Terrified.”

“Did she ask for help?”

“She said Emily was with you.”

“I had not seen Emily since Tuesday.”

“I knew.”

“What happened?”

“Jason came downstairs.”

Rachel tried to leave.

Jason blocked the door.

Sarah told him the school already knew too much.

He struck Sarah against the wall.

Then he took Rachel’s phone and forced her into the basement.

“Was the boy there?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know him?”

“No.”

“Did Sarah help Jason?”

Rachel hesitated.

“She brought water.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“She signed several documents while he held Emily beside the cage.”

“Did she appear drugged?”

“Yes.”

“Did she understand?”

“I cannot know.”

Sarah had been frightened.

Sarah had also remained in the house while our daughter was locked outside.

Fear could explain delay.

It could not automatically erase responsibility.

Rachel continued.

Jason questioned her about the Clark case.

She had reviewed Lily’s missing person records and discovered that Haven Ridge continued billing the county for Lily’s placement six months after she disappeared.

The payments went through a transportation contractor named Reed Family Transit.

Jason’s company.

“Why was Lily at his house?” I asked.

“I do not know.”

“Did he say anything?”

“He said Lily forced everyone to move too early.”

The phrase suggested a network larger than one violent man.

Rachel heard Jason speaking to someone on the phone.

A woman.

He called her Ms. Crane.

Melissa Crane, Sarah’s attorney and Haven Ridge counsel.

The woman told Jason:

Move the boy before the father arrives.

“How did they know I was coming?”

“Sarah sent you something.”

“I received nothing.”

“She tried.”

The smashed phone in the bedroom may have contained the message.

A forensic technician recovered one deleted draft.

Michael, Emily is in the backyard. Jason is moving a child tonight. Do not call first.

It had never been sent.

Another message did leave the phone.

It went to Aunt Colleen, Sarah’s older sister.

Help me get Emily out before Michael arrives.

Colleen never responded.

Her phone had been disconnected for six months.

Sarah may not have known.

Or Jason selected the contact because he knew no answer would come.

The backyard camera archive contained a video made Friday night.

Sarah knelt beside the cage.

“I am opening it.”

Jason stood outside the frame.

“You open that door, Rachel goes into the pool.”

Sarah held the key.

Emily pressed both hands against the bars.

“Mom, please.”

Sarah began crying.

Then she placed the key on the ground.

Jason picked it up.

He told Sarah to carry the cage behind the shed because neighbors could see it from the upstairs window.

Sarah helped move it.

That was the image Detective Ellis had mentioned.

The full recording showed coercion.

It also showed my daughter begging.

I did not know how Emily would live with both truths.

Neither did I.

Sarah’s blood trail led from the bedroom toward the garage.

Security footage showed Jason’s truck leaving at eleven thirty Saturday night.

A second person sat low in the passenger seat.

The face never appeared.

The truck returned alone at two seventeen Sunday morning.

Jason may have moved Sarah before locking Rachel in the pool bag.

He may have moved the basement child during the same trip.

Traffic cameras traced the truck toward a rural property owned by Haven Ridge Youth Recovery.

Police obtained a warrant.

The property was empty.

Inside one bedroom, investigators found Sarah’s torn blouse and a restraint strap stained with blood.

On the wall, someone had written with a black marker:

May you like

SHE CHOSE THE FATHER.

Continue to the next part: A message at the abandoned Haven Ridge property suggests Sarah tried to help Michael and was punished for changing sides.
