Chapter 24 - The Garden

At sixty, I bought another small house.

Tiny backyard.

Enough for tomatoes.

Lily teased:

“You finally missed yard work?”

“I missed basil.”

She came over with gloves.

Installed drip lines.

I said:

“Of course the water engineer is doing irrigation.”

She rolled her eyes.

Then she pulled out a garden hose.

I stared.

She noticed.

“Still?”

“Sometimes.”

She connected it.

No tension.

Then handed me nozzle.

“Your garden.”

I took it.

Water arced gently across soil.

Not a weapon.

Not evidence.

Not memory alone.

A tool.

Then Lily told me she was seeing someone seriously.

His name was Andrew Mills, a civil engineer she met on a stormwater project.

No dramatic billionaire.

No secret family.

They eventually married.

Prenup? They discussed finances openly. Since user likes logic, we can say they had a simple premarital agreement because both had separate retirement assets and Lily wanted clarity. Not trauma, just planning.

Rachel was not invited.

Lily did not tell her.

No obligation.

I walked Lily down aisle? Her father Jason was dead, yes. She asked me to.

At reception, someone sprayed champagne outdoors and Lily startled.

Then laughed.

Healing is not no reflex.

It is the reflex not owning the rest of the night.

Then Lily and Andrew bought a home.

Jointly.

Both names on deed.

Intentional.

She sent photo of closing documents.

I texted:

READ EVERYTHING.

She replied:

Grandma energy.

I was not a grandmother yet.

She meant old.

Rude.

Then a dog.

Golden retriever named Moss.

Moss loved water.

Of course.

Lily bought a plastic kiddie pool.

The first time I saw her hose him down, I froze at the gate.

Lily noticed.

She did not stop.

Good.

Moss shook water everywhere.

She screamed laughing.

I laughed too.

No one was afraid.

Then the last official notice about Rachel arrived.

Her parole/supervision had ended years earlier, restitution fully satisfied, no pending appeals or civil claims.

Everything legally closed.

No open house claim.

No bank issue.

No custody issue.

Rachel had no parental rights to Lily.

No secret account.

No lingering loan.

No evidence dispute.

Done.

I filed the notice.

Then deleted duplicate.

Life finally required no active case folder.

That mattered more than any verdict.
