Chapter 23 - Rachel’s Last Letter

Rachel’s final letter arrived when Lily was twenty-four.

She had not contacted us for six years.

The envelope came through an attorney because she still respected the boundary.

Inside were two separate sealed letters.

One for me.

One for Lily.

I asked Lily.

“Want yours?”

“Yes.”

We sat at my kitchen table.

I opened mine.

Emma,

This is the last letter unless you or Lily contact me.

Good beginning.

Then:

I spent years saying I wanted time. The truth is I wanted control over when consequences arrived.

There.

Then:

I knew the loan was not mine to take. I knew the coffee was not mine to alter. I knew Lily was not mine to punish for protecting you.

Precise.

Then:

I am not writing to ask forgiveness. You already gave me more of that than I deserved.

Then:

I have completed supervision and restitution. I work, I pay my own rent, and I have not opened another design business.

No redemption brand.

Then:

I hope Lily likes water again.

I cried.

Not because Rachel deserved tears.

Because she remembered what she had taken.

Then Lily opened hers.

She read silently.

After a while she handed me one page.

Rachel wrote:

You once asked me to stop and I chose not to. There is no explanation I can give that makes those seconds smaller.

Then:

I am sorry.

No:

I love you.

No request.

Lily folded it.

“I think I’m done.”

“With what?”

“With answering.”

I nodded.

She placed letter in drawer.

Years later, she discarded it.

Her choice.

Rachel lived another life.

I heard nothing.

No need.

Then I sold the house.

Not because backyard.

Because Lily had moved north and I wanted less maintenance.

The buyers were a young couple with a toddler.

At inspection, they asked about the planter beside patio.

Normal.

No stain.

No secret.

I left it.

The house did not need biography.

At closing, title was clean.

No Inland Valley lien ever.

No Rachel interest beyond divorce settlement long resolved.

No criminal restitution.

No protective-order issue.

Just sale.

I signed.

Bought a smaller townhome near Sacramento.

Closer to Lily.

No backyard at first.

I thought that would feel safer.

May you like

Instead I missed one.

Interesting.
