Chapter 4 - The Promise Annie Asked Him to MakeThomas Wade was charged with stalking, unlawful imprisonment, assault, fraud, and violating a protection order.

His associate agreed to cooperate with investigators.

The evidence inside the abandoned building linked both men to theft, drug distribution, and the exploitation of vulnerable families.

Grace would not have to face Thomas alone.

Still, legal safety did not immediately create a home.

A social worker named Karen Mills met with Grace.

She found space for Grace and the children inside a secure family shelter outside the city.

The location was confidential.

Medical care, counseling, child care, and legal support would be provided.

Grace accepted.

She cried when Karen explained that Annie would have her own bed.

“Her own?”

“Yes.”

“And Ben?”

“A crib beside you.”

Grace covered her face.

Michael understood that safety could sound like luxury to someone who had been denied it long enough.

Annie remained uncertain.

“Will Officer Michael come?”

Karen looked at him.

Michael answered, “I can visit if your mom says it is okay.”

Annie stared at the floor.

“Police always leave.”

The words hurt.

Michael sat beside her.

“Officers go to other calls. That does not mean they forget.”

“Will you forget me?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

Michael remembered making the same promise on the street.

He did not offer promises lightly.

“I promise.”

Grace looked at him with gratitude and caution.

“You have already done enough.”

Michael shook his head.

“Annie did enough. The adults are catching up.”

The family moved into the shelter three days later.

Michael visited during approved hours.

At first, he brought practical things.

Shoes for Annie.

Diapers for Ben.

A new baby carrier.

Then Annie asked whether he could bring books.

She had never attended school consistently.

Michael began reading with her each Saturday.

She learned quickly.

Ben gained weight and began crying loudly, a sound doctors called healthy.

Grace entered counseling and started working with an attorney to secure custody protections.

She also enrolled in a job training program.

For the first time in years, she made decisions without someone threatening her.

Michael’s colleagues noticed he talked about Annie often.

One officer teased him.

“You sound like a proud father.”

Michael smiled, then became quiet.

He had never married.

Years of police work made his life unpredictable.

He told himself he did not need a family.

Then a barefoot child appeared on an autumn sidewalk and changed the shape of his world.

One afternoon, Annie handed him a drawing.

It showed four figures.

Grace.

Ben.

Annie.

Michael.

He wore an oversized police hat.

“What is this?” he asked.

“Our safe people.”

Michael looked toward Grace.

She had tears in her eyes.

Annie pointed to each figure.

“Mommy keeps us together. I keep Ben warm. You found us.”

Michael swallowed.

“You found me too.”

Annie smiled.

Months passed.

Thomas accepted a plea agreement carrying a long prison sentence.

Grace received a permanent protection order.

The shelter helped her rent a small apartment.

On moving day, Michael carried boxes up three flights of stairs.

Annie ran from room to room.

“This is my window.”

“This is Ben’s bed.”

“This is our kitchen.”

Grace stood inside the doorway, overwhelmed.

“I never thought we would have this.”

Michael placed the last box down.

“You built it.”

“You helped.”

“You did the hardest part. You kept going.”

Grace looked at him.

“What happens now?”

Michael knew she was not only asking about the apartment.

Their lives had become connected.

Trust had grown carefully between them.

Neither wanted to rush.

“I keep my promise.”

“To Annie?”

“To all of you, if you will let me.”

Grace smiled softly.

“We would like that.”

That evening, they ate pizza on the floor because the table had not arrived.

Ben slept inside his new crib.

Annie leaned against Michael’s arm.

For the first time since he met her, she wore clean shoes and did not carry responsibility in her eyes.

She looked like a child.

Then the apartment phone rang.

Grace answered.

Her expression changed.

It was the hospital.

A medical test had revealed a serious concern about Ben’s health.

The newborn had survived hunger and cold.

Now he faced another fight.

Next: Ben’s diagnosis will test the fragile family they have built, while Annie must finally learn that loving her brother does not mean carrying every burden alone.
