Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Tried to EscapeAnnie’s mother was identified as Grace Carter.

She was twenty seven years old.
According to hospital records, Grace had given birth to Ben only twelve days earlier.
She should have been resting.
Instead, she had been hiding with two children inside an abandoned laundromat.
Detective Bennett showed Michael the recovered documents.
There was a protection request against Grace’s former partner, Thomas Wade.
He was not Ben’s father.
He had lived with Grace for nearly two years and had become increasingly violent.
The request described threats, financial control, and repeated attempts to take Annie away.
Grace planned to enter a shelter after Ben’s birth.
Thomas found her before she could leave.
The man arrested near the abandoned building was not Thomas.
He was one of Thomas’s associates.
Police believed Thomas had paid him to watch the neighborhood and report Grace’s location.
Michael looked through the glass at Annie.
She sat beside Ben’s hospital bassinet, humming quietly.
“She knew they were being hunted,” he said.
Detective Bennett nodded.
“That explains why she told Annie not to trust strangers.”
“Where is Thomas?”
“We do not know yet.”
Michael’s concern deepened.
“If he learns Grace survived, he may come here.”
“Hospital security has been notified.”
Michael looked toward Annie again.
“She trusted me because I said I would stay.”
Detective Bennett studied him.
“You already did more than most people would.”
“It does not feel like enough.”
Grace regained consciousness that evening.
Her first word was Annie’s name.
Michael stood outside the room while a nurse explained that both children were alive.
Grace began crying.
She asked to see them immediately.
Doctors allowed Annie into the room while Michael carried Ben.
The moment Annie saw her mother, she ran toward the bed.
“Mommy.”
Grace wrapped one arm around her.
“I am sorry.”
“You came back.”
“I tried.”
Annie looked at her bruised face.
“The bad man hurt you.”
Grace nodded.
Michael placed Ben beside her.
She touched his cheek and began sobbing.
“My babies.”
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
The room belonged to them.
Later, Grace asked to speak with Michael privately.
“You found them?”
“Yes.”
“How long were they alone?”
“Three nights.”
Grace closed her eyes.
“I told Annie to wait in the laundromat. I thought I would be gone ten minutes.”
“She kept Ben alive.”
Grace looked through the glass at her daughter.
“She should have been playing with dolls.”
“She acted like his mother.”
“I taught her how to hold him because I was afraid.”
Michael sat beside the bed.
“Who is Thomas Wade?”
Grace’s face tightened.
“Someone I should have left sooner.”
“Is he Ben’s father?”
“No.”
“Does he believe he is?”
“He believes everything belongs to him.”
Grace explained that Thomas had taken her bank cards, phone, and identification.
He threatened to report her as unstable and take Annie if she left.
When Grace became pregnant by a man she briefly dated during a separation, Thomas’s control became worse.
He insisted Ben would be raised under his authority.
Grace ran after the birth.
She took almost nothing.
Thomas tracked her through a bank withdrawal and forced her from one temporary location to another.
The laundromat was supposed to be one night.
Then she became sick.
The children ran out of food.
Grace entered the abandoned building after seeing people carry groceries inside.
She never knew the building was connected to Thomas.
Detective Bennett entered with new information.
Thomas had been seen near the hospital parking structure.
Security footage showed him wearing medical scrubs and carrying a visitor badge.
Michael stood immediately.
“He is here?”
“We are locking down the floor.”
Grace’s breathing became rapid.
“He will take Annie.”
“No,” Michael said.
“You do not know him.”
“I know he has to get through police.”
A hospital alarm sounded.
Security officers moved through the corridor.
Michael entered Annie’s room.
She looked up.
“Is the bad man here?”
Michael did not lie.
“Police are looking for him.”
Annie lifted Ben from the bassinet with practiced care.
Michael knelt.
“You do not need to protect him alone anymore.”
She held the baby tighter.
“I promised Mommy.”
Michael removed his police jacket and wrapped it around both children.
“You kept your promise. Now let us keep ours.”
Minutes later, officers arrested Thomas near a service elevator.
He carried Grace’s old identification, a knife, and written directions to the maternity floor.
He had not come to apologize.
He had come to regain control.
Annie watched officers escort him past the far end of the corridor.
She did not cry.
She simply whispered, “He cannot find us now.”
Michael looked at her.
“No.”
But the arrest did not solve everything.
Grace had no home.
No money.
No safe relatives.
When the hospital discharged them, the family would have nowhere to go.
Michael realized rescue was not only removing danger.

Sometimes it meant helping people build a place danger could not follow.
Next: Michael will help Grace enter a safe shelter, but Annie’s desperate request will force him to make a promise that changes his own life.
