Chapter 4

Liam drove through the cold streets of Grand Rapids without knowing where he was going.

His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly.

Every red light felt too long.

Every second gave him more time to remember.

Nora standing in the kitchen.

Nora lowering her eyes.

Nora standing outside on the balcony in the freezing night.

And him...

Standing behind the glass.

Watching.

Doing nothing.

The image kept replaying in his mind.

He had spent years believing he was a good husband because he provided, because he worked hard, because he protected their home.

But now he understood something painful.

Being a good husband wasn't only about protecting someone from the outside world.

It was about making sure they felt safe with you.

And Nora had not felt safe.

Not with him.

The hospital receptionist had given him the name of Nora's doctor.

Dr. Evans.

A cardiologist who had been treating Nora for months.

Months.

The word kept repeating in his mind.

She had been dealing with something serious.

And she carried it alone.

Because she thought he couldn't handle it.

Or maybe...

Because she no longer trusted him enough to share it.

That thought hurt more than anything.

Liam arrived at the hospital.

He sat in his car for several minutes before walking inside.

He wasn't sure what he wanted.

Answers?

Forgiveness?

A chance to fix everything?

But deep down, he knew something.

He didn't deserve to walk in expecting anything.

He had broken something.

And broken things didn't always return to the way they were.

Dr. Evans was sitting in his office when Liam entered.

The doctor looked surprised.

"Mr. Carter?"

"Yes."

"Are you here about Nora?"

Liam nodded.

The doctor studied his face.

"You know about her condition?"

The question made Liam look down.

"Not until today."

Dr. Evans was silent.

Then he sighed.

"She didn't tell you."

It wasn't a question.

Liam shook his head.

"Why?"

The doctor looked at him carefully.

"Because Nora was worried about you."

Liam frowned.

"Me?"

"She said you had enough stress."

The words felt impossible.

Even now.

Even after everything.

Nora was still thinking about him.

"She was worried that if you knew, you would stop focusing on your work."

Liam's eyes became wet.

"She was sick..."

He struggled to finish.

"And she was worried about me?"

Dr. Evans nodded.

"That's who she is."

Silence filled the office.

Then the doctor continued.

"She came here alone."

Liam closed his eyes.

Alone.

That word hurt.

"She asked about treatment costs."

"Why?"

"Because she didn't want you to worry."

Liam looked away.

The irony was unbearable.

She had been protecting him from pain.

And he had caused her more pain than anyone.

After leaving the hospital, Liam went straight to Gwen's house.

This time, he wasn't confused.

He wasn't searching for answers.

He was angry.

Not the loud kind.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that came from finally seeing the truth.

Gwen opened the door.

Again, she smiled.

But this time, Liam saw it differently.

He saw the confidence.

The control.

The way she always guided conversations.

"Liam."

He stepped inside.

"Why?"

Her smile faded.

"Why what?"

"Why did you do this?"

Gwen stared.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Yes, you do."

He placed his phone on the table.

The hospital information.

The charity records.

Everything.

"You knew."

Gwen's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You knew Nora was sick."

Silence.

"And you still convinced me she was stealing from me."

Gwen crossed her arms.

"She was keeping secrets."

"Because she was afraid."

"Because she didn't trust you."

"No."

Liam's voice became firm.

"Because she knew you would twist everything."

Gwen looked offended.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

For the first time, Liam wasn't the younger brother who followed her advice.

He was a husband defending the person he had failed.

"You made me doubt the woman who loved me."

Gwen laughed softly.

"You think she loves you?"

Liam stared.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell you?"

He didn't answer.

Because that question hurt.

Gwen stepped closer.

"Because she knows you."

Liam looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she knows you would choose her."

A pause.

"And that's why she was scared."

Those words hit harder.

Because they were true.

Nora wasn't afraid he wouldn't care.

She was afraid he would care too much.

She had been carrying everything alone because she didn't want to become his burden.

Liam left without another word.

He drove to every place Nora might be.

Her workplace.

Her favorite coffee shop.

The park where they used to walk.

Nothing.

No Nora.

No message.

No answer.

Finally, he returned home.

The apartment was dark.

He opened the door slowly.

Everything was exactly as they left it.

The dinner table.

The plates.

The chair where Nora had sat.

He walked toward the balcony.

The glass door reflected his face.

A face he barely recognized.

He remembered that night.

The cold.

The silence.

The way she looked at him.

Then he noticed something.

On the floor near the balcony door.

A small mark.

A scratch.

He looked closer.

It was from Nora's ring.

She must have removed it there.

Before leaving.

His chest tightened.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice.

"Is this Liam Carter?"

"Yes."

"This is Grand Rapids Medical Center."

His heart stopped.

"Is Nora okay?"

There was a pause.

"Mr. Carter..."

The tone changed.

"Are you a family member?"

"Yes."

"Her emergency contact?"

He froze.

"I don't know."

Another pause.

"She listed you."

Liam closed his eyes.

"Where is she?"

The woman hesitated.

"She was brought in early this morning."

His breathing stopped.

"What happened?"

"We found her unconscious near the apartment building."

The room spun.

"No."

"Mr. Carter..."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"Is she alive?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Relief came for one second.

Only one.

Then the nurse continued.

"But she is in critical condition."

Liam dropped into the chair.

His hand covered his face.

The woman he loved was fighting for her life.

And the last thing he had given her...

Was a locked door.

At the hospital, Liam sat outside the emergency room.

Hours passed.

He didn't move.

He didn't eat.

He didn't sleep.

He only waited.

Finally, a doctor walked out.

"Mr. Carter?"

Liam immediately stood.

"How is she?"

The doctor looked serious.

"She is stable."

Liam exhaled.

"But she is very weak."

He nodded.

"Can I see her?"

The doctor hesitated.

"She is awake."

Liam walked into the room.

And stopped.

Nora looked smaller than he remembered.

Pale.

Exhausted.

But still...

Nora.

Her eyes opened.

When she saw him, there was no anger.

No hatred.

Only sadness.

"Liam..."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Nora."

He moved closer.

"I'm sorry."

She looked away.

"I know."

The words hurt.

Because they weren't forgiveness.

They were acceptance.

A quiet acknowledgment of damage.

"I was wrong."

She remained silent.

"I should have trusted you."

Still silent.

"I should have protected you."

A tear moved down his face.

"But I hurt you."

Nora looked at him.

And finally said:

"The worst part wasn't that you believed her."

A pause.

"It was that for one moment..."

Her voice broke.

"...I believed you would never stop loving me."

Liam couldn't speak.

Because there was nothing he could say.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Only regret.

Outside the hospital room, Gwen stood in the hallway.

Watching.

But this time...

She wasn't confident.

She wasn't in control.

Because Liam finally saw the truth.

The person who almost destroyed his marriage wasn't Nora.

It was the person who convinced him to doubt her.

And now Gwen realized something terrifying.

She had not just caused an argument.

She had exposed herself.

Because Liam was no longer blind.

May you like

And he was about to uncover the final secret.

The reason Gwen had been so determined to destroy Nora.
