Chapter 3

Liam sat on the edge of the bed holding Nora's note in his hands.

The apartment was completely silent.

The kind of silence that made every memory louder.

He looked around the room.

The blanket Nora always folded every morning.

The small plant she kept near the window.

The picture of them from their wedding day sitting on the shelf.

In that photo, they were smiling like nothing in the world could ever separate them.

Liam remembered that day clearly.

Nora had been nervous before walking down the aisle.

Her hands were shaking.

He had held them and whispered, "You don't have to be afraid. I'm right here."

Now those words felt painful.

Because when she needed him to be there...

He wasn't.

He had stood on the other side of a glass door and let the woman he loved stand alone in the cold.

All because he believed someone else's version of the truth.

His phone suddenly rang.

Gwen.

Liam stared at the screen.

For the first time in years, seeing his sister's name didn't bring comfort.

It brought suspicion.

He answered.

"Hello?"

"Liam."

Gwen's voice sounded calm.

Almost too calm.

"Did she contact you?"

"No."

A pause.

"Did you find anything?"

Liam looked at Nora's note.

"Why do you care?"

The question surprised Gwen.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean why are you so interested in proving she did something wrong?"

Silence.

Only for a second.

But Liam noticed.

"You think I'm wrong?"

Gwen's voice changed slightly.

"I'm your sister. I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?"

"From being used."

Liam closed his eyes.

"She didn't steal anything."

Gwen became quiet.

"What?"

"The money wasn't stolen."

"How do you know?"

"Because I checked."

Another silence.

Then Gwen sighed.

"Liam, don't let her manipulate you."

His expression hardened.

"Manipulate me?"

"Yes."

"You told me she was taking money."

"She was moving money without telling you."

"To a children's medical fund."

Gwen stopped.

Liam heard it.

The hesitation.

"What?"

"The transfers went to a charity."

Gwen didn't answer immediately.

"Maybe that's what she wants you to believe."

Liam stood.

"Stop."

The word came out stronger than he expected.

Gwen went silent.

"I don't know what happened yet."

He looked at the wedding photo.

"But I know Nora."

"No, Liam."

Gwen's voice became colder.

"You know the woman she wants you to see."

Something inside him snapped.

Because that was exactly what he had been doing.

Seeing what Gwen told him to see.

Not what was actually in front of him.

"I need to go."

"Liam."

He ended the call.

For the first time in his life...

He chose not to listen to his sister.

The next morning, Liam went to the charity office listed in the bank records.

The building was small.

Nothing like the wealthy organizations Gwen probably imagined.

A simple brick building.

A small reception desk.

A wall covered with children's drawings.

He approached the receptionist.

"Excuse me."

The woman looked up.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm looking for information about a donation."

She smiled.

"Sure. What name?"

"Nora Carter."

The receptionist's smile immediately changed.

"Oh."

Liam noticed.

"You know her?"

The woman nodded.

"Of course."

His heart tightened.

"How?"

"Nora has been helping us for years."

Years.

Not months.

Years.

The receptionist pulled up a record.

"She started donating after her younger brother passed away."

Liam looked confused.

"Her brother?"

"Yes."

The woman smiled sadly.

"She told us she knew what it felt like when families couldn't afford proper treatment."

Liam looked down.

He never knew that.

Not once.

The receptionist continued.

"Recently, she asked about making a larger donation."

"Why?"

The woman smiled.

"She said she wanted to do something special for her husband."

His throat tightened.

"For me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The receptionist looked surprised.

"She never told you?"

Liam shook his head slowly.

The woman looked at him.

"She wanted to create a medical support program in your name."

The room became silent.

Liam felt like he couldn't breathe.

"My name?"

She nodded.

"She said you always helped everyone else but never allowed yourself to be appreciated."

He looked away.

Because the truth hurt.

The $8,000 wasn't a secret.

It wasn't betrayal.

It was love.

A gift.

Something she had planned for him.

And he had accused her of stealing.

When Liam left the charity office, he sat in his car for almost an hour.

He didn't start the engine.

He just sat there.

Thinking.

Remembering.

Every moment he had ignored.

Every time Nora had supported him.

The night he lost his job.

She had stayed awake until 3 AM telling him everything would be okay.

The time he was sick.

She took days off work to take care of him.

The years when money was tight.

She never complained.

And the first time someone suggested she was dishonest...

He believed it.

A tear fell onto his hand.

He wiped it away quickly.

But there was no point hiding anymore.

Not from himself.

That evening, Liam went to Gwen's house.

She opened the door with a surprised expression.

"Liam?"

He didn't smile.

"Why did you lie to me?"

Her expression changed.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yes, you do."

He stepped inside.

"The money wasn't stolen."

Gwen became defensive.

"She explained everything?"

"No."

Liam looked directly at her.

"I found out myself."

A moment of silence.

Then Gwen crossed her arms.

"Fine."

The sudden change shocked him.

"Fine?"

"Yes."

She walked toward the kitchen.

"Maybe I was wrong about the money."

Liam watched her.

"But?"

Gwen turned.

"But I was right about one thing."

"What?"

"Your wife keeps secrets."

His face tightened.

"What secret?"

Gwen smiled slightly.

"Ask her where she was the night before your anniversary."

Liam froze.

"What?"

"I said ask her."

"Gwen."

She walked closer.

"You think you know everything about Nora."

A pause.

"You don't."

Liam stared at her.

He wanted to dismiss it.

He wanted to walk away.

But the damage had already been done.

Because doubt was something Gwen knew how to plant.

And once planted...

It was difficult to remove.

That night, Liam searched through old messages.

Not because he believed Gwen.

Because he was desperate to understand.

He found something.

A message from Nora three months earlier.

To someone named "Dr. Evans."

The message said:

"I need to ask about the procedure. Please keep this confidential until I tell Liam."

Liam stared at the screen.

A procedure?

Confidential?

His heart began racing.

What was Nora hiding?

Was Gwen right?

Had there been something else?

He immediately regretted the thought.

Because he knew where this road led.

Suspicion.

Accusation.

Pain.

The same road that had already hurt Nora.

But he couldn't stop.

He needed answers.

The next morning, he found the hospital number connected to Dr. Evans.

He called.

After confirming his identity, the receptionist said:

"Mr. Carter?"

"Yes."

"Are you calling about Nora Carter's appointment?"

His hand tightened around the phone.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then the receptionist spoke.

"Her appointment was scheduled for next week."

"For what?"

Another pause.

"The surgery consultation."

Liam felt the world stop.

"Surgery?"

"Yes."

"What kind of surgery?"

The receptionist hesitated.

Then answered.

"The treatment for her heart condition."

Liam froze.

His voice became barely audible.

"Heart condition?"

The receptionist realized something.

"You didn't know?"

Silence.

"No."

He whispered.

"I didn't know."

And in that moment...

Liam finally understood the full depth of his betrayal.

Nora wasn't hiding money.

She was hiding pain.

She wasn't planning to leave him.

She was trying to protect him.

And while she carried fear about her own future...

He had made her stand outside in the freezing cold.

Alone.

The phone slipped slightly from his hand.

Because for the first time...

May you like

Liam wasn't afraid of losing his marriage.

He was afraid he had already lost it.
